UNMET EXPECTATIONS; AND MY “NEW” SPEEDY 30
The Gift Of Unmet Expectations (That I Thought I Wanted)
The day of this video, my plan was to arrive at The Village Shops on Venetian Bay early so that I could do some filming before I met a girlfriend for lunch. I don’t remember exactly what song played on the car radio, but it could have been Phil Collins’ A Groovy Kind of Love. The 80s had some wonderful music, and it always puts me in a cheery mood. I also was grateful that I had given myself plenty of time to film before going into the restaurant and that my eye makeup looked better than I thought it would; plus, I was happy to be carrying my newly refurbished Lous Vuitton Speedy 30 that I purchased in the fall of 1994.
I pulled into a tree-covered spot in the parking lot and gazed up through the windshield. A putty-colored sky stretched out everywhere–not a single spot of blue–and my happy feelings dissipated under the growing realization that, without a bright and shiny sun, my Youtube video and blog post photographs were all going to look grey and gloomy.
Had I not been filming, I would have liked the weather, because the temperature was pleasant (77 Fahrenheit). The problem was, my viewers would not feel the pleasant temperature, but they would see how grey the sky was. So, I reminded myself–like I almost always do before I begin filming a video–that the imperfection of the videos and photographs I publish are a reflection of my real life. I don’t use filters, nor do I photoshop my wrinkles, dark circles, sagging skin, blemishes, or grey skies. I show the real me and my real life–including the weather that’s in my real life. So, I shut off the car engine and tapped the red filming button on my iPhone. My plan was to chat with all of you on camera for a bit while I walked across the parking lot to The Bayside Seafood Grill.
I opened the door, got out of the car, and the roar of construction cranes boomed all around me. Raised 15 to 20 feet into the air, men in bright orange metal baskets worked away at something in the trees, and all I could think was how on earth will my viewers be able to hear me with all of this horrible noise in the background?
Then, I noticed something–that the men were not repairing something; they were wrapping the palm trees with hundreds and hundreds of twinkling, white Christmas lights. And, because of the overcast day (that I had worried would look so gloomy on camera), I could see all the lights glittering away like happy, twinkling fairies perched on thin black swaying wires hung from tree to tree and wrapped around tall, lean palms.. It was fun to watch.
One thing that I love about November and December in the U.S. is the Christmas lights–or holiday lights, whichever you like to call them. They mean something sweet and magical and unique to almost everyone, it seems, which makes them just that much more wonderful. Whether shining brightly on Christmas trees inside cosy homes or outside on houses and barns and stores and high rises. On light posts, fishing piers, in the city and in the country.
I didn’t realize that one of the men in a basket had noticed me filming him, and in response he gave me an enormous, beaming smile. I saw it when I played the video back on my desktop computer, and it was such a wonderful, beautiful surprise. It still makes me smile today.
My (Refurbished) Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, Purchased in 1994
My handbag in this post looks new, but as I mentioned earlier I actually purchased it and a separate leather shoulder strap at the Louis Vuitton that was in Saks Fifth Avenue, Waterside Shops, Naples, Florida, in the fall of 1994 (I was 34). During my 30s and into my 40s I carried this bag everywhere, and all the time. It was the first luxury bag I ever bought.
However, by the mid-to late 2000’s–due to the humidity that’s naturally occurring in our subtropical locale–the brass hardware on my Speedy 30 eventually developed verdigris, causing green goo deposits on the leather and fabric (the zipper, zipper pull, top-handle rings and studs, and the strap buckle and clasps). Even with the verdigris I continued to carry the bag for years (see this post here, here, and here). However, eventually it was getting so unsightly I decided it was time to take it to Louis Vuitton and have it refurbished, and I am thrilled that I did. I won’t go into all of the details here, but the leather and hardware were replaced, and the original monogram canvas remains. I also purchased a new Louis Vuitton shoulder strap to match the new leather on the bag. If you would like me to go into more details, including a review of the bag, what I did recently to preserve the leather, why I chose it as my first luxury handbag purchase (and would I choose it as my very first luxury purchase all over again), let me know.
For photographs of all of these items, as well as the items in my handbag and what I’m wearing, simply scroll down the page.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog, and happy November

(ABOVE & BELOW) Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while know that whenever I will be ordering a salad at a restaurant I bring my own homemade dressing (2 tablespoons Bragg Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1 tablespoon Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Himalayan Chef Himalayan Pink Salt to taste; in 4-oz Glass Leak-Proof Bottle). This dressing is free of seasonings that are allergens for me.

(ABOVE) After lunch, on the way back to my car, I noticed this GEM 6-Seat Electric Vehicle and thought it was cute that the owner had put a Ferrari emblem on it. (At least, that’s what I am guessing, because the GEM on-line site doesn’t mention a Ferrari model.)

(ABOVE) I put this Bracelet Buddy in my handbag to remember to tell all of you about it. It’s helpful for putting on bracelets that have challenging clasps. (BELOW) My David Yurman 18k Gold Crossover Bracelet you see here has a lobster-claw clasp that is difficult to latch without help. I use the Bracelet Buddy to hold onto the ring side of the bracelet while I use my other hand to open the lobster claw clasp, and attach that clasp to the ring. It is an amazing tool. I bought this one and another one for my mother 10 or so years ago. It is indispensable.
(ABOVE) This Bracelet Buddy bracelet helper is so useful. I bought one for my mother and one for myself 10-plus years ago and use is so very much when my husband isn’t available to help me put on a bracelet. I wouldn’t be without it.

Hi Janis!
Your Speedy 30 story brought back such vivid and fun memories for me!
I graduated college in 1984 and then began working 2 months later after a trip to Europe with friends.
My first paycheck was $250 and I marched right over to Saks on 5th Avenue in NYC and bought myself a brand new Speedy 25 with my whole paycheck. I think it just covered the cost of the bag. I will never forget that.
It was back in the day that they used to imprint your initials on bags.. not just on luggage.
I wore that Speedy to death and enjoyed every moment of it.
Thanks for sweet memories of a simpler time of youth with no expenses at all and when LV bags cost $250. 🙂
Hi, Claudia! Oh my gosh, how amazing that your Speedy cost $250 at the time. Isn’t that something? How much prices have gone up since that time?! I love, love, love your story! Thank you for sharing it with me 🙂
I love the richer shades of makeup for the fall.
My one complaint about this time of year is the early sundown. I guess I’m one of those people who needs the sunlight and as a result, I’m thinking of purchasing one of those happy lights for when I’m working at my desk. Ironically, my husband loves this time of year; he’s more of a night owl.
Be well and thank you for the wonderful vlogs.
Hi, Maya! I’m like you and am a morning person. I have the most energy then. I hope the happy light works for you. It sounds like a great idea! You be well, too, and thank you so much for taking the time to write to me!
Hi Janis. I am a new subscriber and I just love your channel and website. I am your age, and you are such an inspiration to me. I love how positive you are, and I look to you for fashion. Thank you.
Hi, Em! Thank you so much for subscribing! I so appreciate you taking the time to write to me. 🙂
Hi Janis,
Thank you for a great post. Your Speedy 30 looks brand new! I have a Speedy 25 that is sorely in need of refurbishment. Could you kindly do a post on the whole process. Did it take a long time?
Thank you,
Lois
Hi, Lois! Thank you for letting me know you would like me to do a post about my Speedy 30 refurbishment. Since it was accomplished during Covid, I’m guessing the process was a bit more bumpy than usual. I think it was about three months.
Hello Janis
I noticed this week that Mineral Fusion is no longer EWG Verified. I’m heartbroken. It seems that they use phenoxyethanol
Listed as a 4 on the skin deep site. I looked at the concerns they listed for this product and am considering tossing my products, especially the powders and lip products.
I’d be interested to hear your view on this additive.
Hi, Bea! Oh goodness, how unfortunate! I tried to find it on the site and couldn’t anymore; I’ll have to check again, because I was probably just not inputting the name correctly or something. Why do brands change perfectly wonderful products? You ask a very good question, and I will have to think on that. I’d like to do some more research before I give up on it. At least the one I’m using is fine, because it was purchased before this change. I appreciate you letting me know.
Dear Bea, I have good news. I wrote to the company and I have copy/pasted my email and their response. Because the formula is still the same, I will keep using the foundation and lipsticks, etc.
Dear Support,
I would like to know, has the mineral fusion powder foundation formula changed since you stopped being EWG verified?
I am a clean-beauty content creator at JLJBackToClassic on YouTube, and my followers are asking me if the foundation powder is the same foundation powder I recommended when it was EWG verified, back in November 2022.
Here is the post https://jljbacktoclassic.com/archives/34067
I look forward to hearing back and, hopefully, with good news—that the formula is the same and I can still recommend it.
All the best,

Hello,
There have been no formula changes to the Pressed Powder Foundation.
We are growing our brand and did not renew our partnership with EWG as we’re exploring other certifications that are more globally recognized.
Have a lovely day.
