Elegant and Ladylike Summer Looks

Ruffle Tops and Slip Skirts

Staying cool in the summer while still looking pretty does not have to be difficult–if you have certain classic basics in your wardrobe.  Three that I love are loose-fitting ruffle tops, wide-leg jeans, and flowy slip skirts.

The first time I discovered the magic of a slip skirt was in 1998.  I was was looking for something feminine and elegant to wear to my 20th high school reunion and found a Donna Karan pastel blue and ivory floral slip skirt at Saks 5th Avenue that was actually flattering on my substantial hips.  I still have and wear it to this day.

The Floral Slip Skirt I show in this post and video comes in seven different colors, including two prints, and is priced at a very affordable $49.90.  It has a gorgeous smooth, silky crepe fabric that creates a drapey, fluid look when you walk.  The effect is feminine and flattering.

The name “slip skirt” derives from its design, which resembles a classic lingerie slip. However, a slip skirt is not a slip–and I always wear a slip under a slip skirt for two reasons. First, to ensure that you cannot see through it and, second, so that it does not cling to me like a classic slip might (especially if I am perspiring from the heat).

The other item that keeps me cool but still looking elegant is a ruffle top.  Both the Sleeveless Ruffle Top and the Drapey Chiffon Split Neck Long Sleeve Blouse I show here have a loose fit, which not only helps to keep you cool but also makes you look undersatedly pretty.  I absolutely love either top with pants and jeans, but they also would look adorable with short shorts and sandals or tennis shoes.  And, of course, I think the long-sleeve top looks like it was made for the slip skirt with which I pair it in this post.  The final look is so pretty and feminine.
