Fine China And Bed Tray, and My Pink Leather Jacket OOTD
The Story of My Mother’s Breakfast Bed Tray & China
I remember one day when I was a young girl, my mother showing me two new purchases she had made. The first was a white wooden bed tray. It had a tilt-up section in the middle, a removable tray on top, and on each side were deep baskets, perfect for nesting a newspaper, mail, magazines, or stationery. On top of the tray she had placed a fine bone china breakfast set with tiny, pastel-blue flowers sprinkled over a white background. There was a cup and saucer, small plate and cereal or oatmeal bowl, a creamer and sugar bowl and, taking center attention, a tiny one-serving coffee pot.
My mother did not often take the time to show me her new purchases, so I knew that these must be special to her. How could she not be enamored of a ritual so fun and luxurious as breakfast in bed on things that were so pretty–and I have never forgotten about them.
Several decades later, in 2013 when my mother moved from her 4,500 square-foot home to a much smaller condominium in a retirement community, my brothers and I were given what she did not take with her to her new home. I looked for the breakfast set, but could not find it, and my mother could not remember what had happened to it. My parents had made quite a few moves in the decades since I had seen it last and somewhere along the way it went missing. As for the bed tray, it was in rough condition by now–with numerous dents, broken basket stakes and chipped paint–and the top tray was missing. In the end, I decided to let it go.
Eventually, I regretted not keeping what was left of the bed tray, and about five years ago I began searching on line for that tray and for my mother’s china. I found several people re-selling the tray, but none was in the condition I wanted. Then, this past November, I found the bed tray, brand new.
As for the china, that has been more elusive to locate. It appears that breakfast sets like my mother’s are not currently being sold by fine porcelain brands. The 200-year-old Hungarian porcelain maufactory Herend, for example, offers Coffee, Mocha Coffee, Tea or Cake Sets, but no true breakfast sets with matching cup and saucer, mini sugar bowl and creamer, small plate, and petite coffee pot. Instead, breakfast sets like this are put together by retailers and resellers from individual pieces and then packaged as “breakfast sets”–some even including matching egg cup, salt and pepper shakers, and toast rack. Unfortunately, at this time at least, this sort of set does not seem to be popular. Therefore, not all of the pieces that would make up my mother’s set are available, either individually or as a set, new or pre-loved.
Herend’s Chinese Bouquet
During the search for my mother’s china, I came upon another pattern that captured my attention–Herend Chinese Bouquet. I first saw this china at a local Naples shop called Jenning’s in the late 80s or early 90s and loved it; but at that time, it was not in my budget. It is absolutely beautiful.
The pattern features hand-painted 24k-gold details, a central peony circled by a garland of leaves against a white background, and a wide basketweave relief trimming a scalloped rim. The pattern is available in a variety of colors, and my favorites are green, blue, and raspberry (also sometimes called purple). I decided to see if I could find raspberry pieces to make up a breakfast set, and sure enough I could! This was in November, so I put both this china and the bed tray on my wish list, and my husband gifted them to me for Christmas. I go into detail about the history of this pattern in my video, so if you are interested in knowing more you can find the video at the bottom of this blog post. I also go into more depth about each of the pieces in my current set. As for my mother’s china, I have not yet decided whether I will continue to pursue it. Obviously, it is not something I actually need–or ever needed–but we shall see. I do still think about it.
A Pink Leather Jacket For Spring
The pretty Pink Leather Jacket I am wearing in this video is new and was sent to me by the brand The Jacket Maker. As a direct-to-consumer brand, they offer high-quality leather jackets at competitive prices by cutting out the middleman. I was impressed by the wide selection of leather jackets and coats they show on line–in a variety of styles and colors for both women and men. However, I was immediately captivated by this one. I love this color of pink–and in the classic collar style (I am wearing size XS; $295). However, if you like this color but would prefer a collarless style, they offer that, too–plus many other styles and colors. To receive 10% off, simply use my savings code, Janis10.

Bed Tray & Breakfast Set

(ABOVE) This white-painted Wooden Bed Tray With Reading Rack can be used for meals, and also for writing letters and reading a book. Under the removable tray is a reading rack, which offers five different tilt settings.

(ABOVE) For my Christmas present from my husband, I requested several pieces of Herend Chinese Bouquet China in the color raspberry, so that I could put together a breakfast set for use on a bed tray.

(ABOVE) I requested two Herend Chinese Bouquet 7.38″ Plates. These are actually salad plates, but I wanted them primarily for afternoon tea or when a guest requests a light breakfast. I recently bought two dinner plates as well. I use these on the bed tray and also the dining room table; they are a more appropriate size for full meals.
If I serve fruit with breakfast, I currently use vintage clear cut-glass bowls similar in size to these Clear Glass Vintage-Inspired Bowls. They look pretty with this china and also work nicely for yogurt.

(ABOVE) The distinctive Herend stamp on the back of the 7.38″ plate. Don’t you love the sprinkling of delicate flowers scattered here and there?

(ABOVE) When the Cups with Saucers arrived, I was surprised to find that each saucer was shaped like a bowl. How interesting and very pretty–plus they can also be used for fruit or yogurt.

(ABOVE) This Herend Chinese Bouquet 2″ Mini Sugar Bowl is the perfect size for a bed tray. Plus, I love the rose finial on the lid. I chose this 2.75″ Creamer because of its pretty shape. It is the smallest I have been able to find so far in the color raspberry, but I have seen smaller sizes in other colors. I hope to one day procure a smaller raspberry creamer, just for use on the bed tray.

(ABOVE) This 2″ Bud Vase is so petite, it reminds me of something you might find in a doll house. So cute! Also, what is so interesting is that there is a different design on one side verses the other–just like on the cups, coffee pot, creamer, and sugar bowl. (For example: Note the small floral on the bud vase above, and the larger floral on the bud vase below. Both are the same bud vase.)

(ABOVE) A variety of larger Herend Chinese Bouquet coffee pots are available, but I wanted this particular 6″/1-Cup Coffee Pot, because it was so adorable, the perfect size for the bed tray, and had the same rose finial as the sugar bowl. I am considering getting a larger pot–which would be much more practical–because we use the set at the dining table, too.

(ABOVE) If you wish to keep your coffee or tea hot, a warmer works nicely. The bottom of this Herend Chinese Bouquet 1-Cup Coffee Pot is too small in diameter to rest alone on the Ceramic Warmer–but I remedied the problem with a matching saucer under the pot.
