GIRLFRIENDS LUNCH AT LAPLAYA & WHAT WE WORE
LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort
I regularly get together with friends, but I don’t often vlog with them, simply because I cherish our private time. Pulling out a camera is one thing, but filming our outing for public consumption is a completely different story. I can’t be totally present with anyone if I’m worrying about lighting, sound, weather, camera angles, etc.
So, I feel like it’s significant when I do film with my friends, and this lunch was particularly special since it included two of them–*CSG and Gail Theile. (See Gail in additional posts here and here.)
We decided to dine at Baleen in LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort in Naples, and luckily the rain that was forecast held off until later in the afternoon. Although we typically sit indoors when the weather begins to heat up, the prettiest spot was definitely the porch, and since the temperature was in the 80s Fahrenheit, instead of 90s, like it is today, we were perfectly comfortable (there was also a slight breeze).
We each chose salads with grilled chicken for our entrees. (I show photographs of our meals below.) Gail and *CSG ordered the Waldorf and Quinoa salads, respectively, and I asked for a simple mix of greens and cucumber with grilled chicken–and no dressing, garlic, or hot red pepper (allergies).
If You Have Food Restrictions, Take Note
Because I ‘d made our reservations online, I was able to fill out the restaurant’s on-line Dietary Restrictions form, ticking each box that applied. Unfortunately, even after filling out the form in advance and telling my server my dietary restrictions, my chicken still came seasoned with garlic, which I discovered after taking a few bites. My server was very apologetic (and expressed genuine care and concern from the start), and the second time around, my chicken was fine. However, clearly, the restaurant’s system in this particular area still has some kinks to work out.
I bring all of this up as a reminder that even when your server and the restaurant staff have the best intentions, mistakes still can be made, so if you have food restrictions due to health risks, it’s best to check your food before your consume it. Generally, I can detect from a small bite or two if a dish contains garlic, but unfortunately I can’t tell if it contains allergens like hot red pepper, cilantro, or others. My allergic reaction usually is an IC flareup or breakouts all over my forehead (which last for up to a week) and an RLS flareup for one or several nights, but these usually only happen if I consume a whole meal with an offending allergen. Other people, however, can have much more severe, even life-threatening reactions from just one bite of an allergen.
My Palazzo Pants Outfit
I am getting so much wear out of the clear, block-heel sandals I bought two summers ago. They work beautifully for a resort look with cotton skirts, sundresses, and particularly long pants like the ones I wore here. They’re a perfect, leg-lengthening neutral, because they are exactly the color of your own skin. If you buy a high-heel pair with a block heel, like mine, I think you’ll discover they are quite comfortable for walking some distance. Mine are from 2017, but I found quite a few similar clear sandals available on line, and I show them at the bottom of this post.
My short-sleeve, open-weave sweater also is from several summers ago, and my palazzo pants are from last summer. Both are among my favorite pieces for summer, because they pair so easily with other separates. They also are classic styles that typically are brought back every year, and you can see the similars I found to these as well at the bottom of this post.
At-Home Try-On, 5 Pairs of Eyelasses or Sunglasses
The last time Gail wore her prescription eyeglasses in one of my videos, several people asked where they could find them. Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact model name; they’re several years old. However, she bought them at WarbyParker.com, and there are several pairs on line that look quite similar–both in eyeglasses and sunglasses.
What’s interesting about Warby Parker is that you can choose five pairs to try on at home. The try-on service, including shipping both ways, is free. If you find a pair or two you like, you keep them. (You provide your credit card information prior to shipping, and they simply charge you for what you don’t send back.) If you don’t buy a pair, you still are not charged for the try-on or the shipping charges either way. I’ve ordered two try-ons over the years, and although I haven’t purchased a pair yet, I found the experience easy, fun, and helpful and would definitely do more try-ons in the future. Their prices are very affordable–especially for prescription glasses.
Also, I haven’t tried it yet (I’m not sure it was available when I did try-ons), but according to the Warby Parker website, you now can get your vision checked on line for a prescription–it takes about 20 minutes–and the results are reviewed by a doctor within a day. If any of you have already tried this–either at Warby Parker or elsewhere–I’d love to know what you thought of it.
Happy Fourth of July!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by today.

Scenes From The Video

(ABOVE) Because the temperature was comfortable outside (upper 80s F, rather than 90s F), we decided to sit on the porch at Baleen, instead of inside.
(ABOVE) Our view at lunch. The sky was a bit overcast and rain was forecast, so we were thankful the downpour held off until later in the afternoon.

(ABOVE) Caesar Salad with chicken.
(ABOVE) Due to dietary restrictions, I requested just mixed greens with cucumber and unseasoned chicken. The photograph you see above is the first salad that was brought to the table, seasoned. (They quickly replaced it with the correct order, but I didn’t think to photograph it.) I bring my own salad dressing. (Below, see the glass, leak-proof bottle I use for dining out.)
(ABOVE) A selfie on the porch. I bought these Kate Spade earrings two summers ago and wear them often; the bow is so fun. See an alternative cute pair below.
