ABOVE) In this Makeup GRWM post and video, I show the steps I followed to go from bare face to this finished look, using all-natural makeup from Honest Beauty, Mineral Fusion, RMS Beauty, and more. I wouldn’t keep the mascara looking like this. I would comb it out so it isn’t clumpy. However, I did want you to see how thick and long it can make your lashes.

GRWM MAKEUP IN 14 STEPS; AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP
The Steps I Took To Apply This Clean-Beauty Makeup Look
This makeup look was actually an experiment that I decided to film just in case I ended up liking it. I did, so that’s why I’m featuring it. Although I tried my best to describe my process in this post, the video is a much more detailed accounting of what I did and how I did it.
The one thing I would change is that next time, I would apply the eyeshadow along my makeup guard much lighter than I did in the video, so that I don’t have to blend away so much afterward in an attempt to soften the demarcation line. (This is more easy to understand if you have already seen my video.) If I want the color darker on my lid and crease, I would build it up gradually, and a few centimeters away from my makeup guard. Some of you may prefer not to use a guard at all, and that might also work. However, I prefer using a guard to keep the shadow within a more defined area.
The Environemtal Working Group
All the makeup I used is not only considered clean and health-conscious, but most of the products also carry the Environmetal Working Group’s Best/Safest #1 or #2 rating on their Hazard/Data Availability Scale–or, even better, they have the EWG Verified Seal. This mark on a personal-care, cosmetic, or cleaning product indicates that it meets the EWG’s strictest standards for transparency and health. The foundation, mascara, and lip and cheek products I’m wearing here all have this seal.
I hope you enjoy this blog post (and the video at the bottom). If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments section.
All the best to you, and if you will be celebrating Thanskgiving, happy holidays!

STEP 1
Apply Foundation

ABOVE) Apply Mineral Fusion Pressed Powder Foundation (at Amazon, Target) onto face, upper eyelids, and onto neck with the Sigma F82 Round Kabuki Brush (at Neiman Marcus). Using the Sigma E21 Smudge Brush, also apply foundation under lower eyelashes (at Neiman Marcus). The color I used for my skin tone is Warm 3.

STEP 2
Apply Concealer

(ABOVE) Apply additional foundation to conceal red or brown spots (and darkness at inner corner of eyes) with a Sigma Precision Brush (similar at Neiman Marcus, QVC, Amazon).

(Similar at Neiman Marcus, QVC, Amazon)
STEP 3
Apply Medium-Tone Eyeshadow

(ABOVE & BELOW) Using a Makeup Guard to keep eyeshadow where you want it (at Amazon), apply the top-left, matte, medium-brown color from the Honest Beauty Get It Together Eyeshadow Palette (at Ulta, Amazon, Target) all over eyelid and into and above crease with the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush (at Amazon). Then, sweep the same medium-brown color under lower eyelashes with the Sigma E21 Smudge Brush (at Neiman Marcus).

STEP 4
Apply Dark-Tone Eyeshadow

(ABOVE & BELOW) Using a Makeup Guard to keep eyeshadow where you want it, apply the bottom-left, dark-brown color from the Honest Beauty Get It Together Eyeshadow Palette (at Ulta, Amazon, Target) in a v-shape to outer corners of eyelids with the Sigma E32 Exact Blend Eye Brush (at Neiman Marcus).

STEP 5
Blend Eyeshadows

(ABOVE) With the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush (at Amazon), blend the medium-brown and dark-brown shadows together by gently swirling brush over lid, into crease, under eyelashes, and onto the outer demarcation line (to soften this line). If necessary, further soften the demarcation line with a Sky Organic Cotton Swab For Sensitive Skin (at Amazon).
NOTE: If the demarcation line is still stronger than you like, clean off the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush with a Microfiber Cloth (at Amazon) and apply a small amount of powder foundation onto the demarcation line and over the entire lid. If you do this, make sure to re-apply the medium-brown shadow all over lid again (using the same Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush, but again cleaned off). This will bring back the color where you want it (stay away from the demarcation line).

Pack of Six Microfiber Cloths to clean off makeup brushes during makeup application (at Amazon)

(ABOVE) I use Microfiber Cloths to clean off my makeup brushes during makeup application, because they really are superior to tissue. (I don’t use these on my skin—only on brushes.) Eventually I wash the brushes with soap and water. Also, I always wash new microfiber cloths before using them (at Amazon).
STEP 6
Apply Eyeliner

(ABOVE) Line upper eyelids and the outer one-third area under eyelashes with the Mineral Fusion Eye Pencil in the color Touch (at Target, Amazon). Then, smudge the line on eyelid and under lower lashes with the Sigma E21 Smudge Brush (at Neiman Marcus).

STEP 7
Set Eyeshadows & Eyeliner

(ABOVE) To set eyeshadow and eyeliner, sweep a small amount of RMS Beauty Un-Powder Powder (at Nordstrom, Amazon) over eyelids, crease, and under eyelashes with the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush (at Amazon). Although this powder is white, it goes on colorless (when used sparingly–do not use too much!).
NOTE: This wonderful powder also can be used as an eyeshadow primer or to set makeup on t-zone or elsewhere. It’s very versatile. I have tried several different brands of colorless (white) powder and this one is the only one I am not allergic to. (Others gave me a headache, strangely enough.)

STEP 8
Apply Primer & Mascara To Top Eyelashes

(ABOVE & BELOW) Apply the primer from Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer in One (at Ulta, Amazon, Target) to only the upper lashes of both eyes (do not apply to lower eyelashes, unless you want to lengthen them). Next, apply the mascara to upper eyelashes of one eye only, and then comb out with Eyelash Comb. Let dry and repeat for extra-long upper eyelashes. Then, do the same for other eye. This primer/mascara is amazing!

STEP 9
Apply Mascara To Bottom Eyelashes

STEP 10
Apply Blush

(ABOVE) Gently stipple Honest Beauty Creme Cheek + Lip Color, Rose Pink (at Ulta, Amazon, Target) onto apples of cheeks, cheekbone, and forehead with the Sigma F80 Air Flat Kabuki Brush (at Target).

STEP 11
Set Makeup, Apply Petroleum Jelly or Butter

(ABOVE & BELOW) Lightly spritz purified water onto face to set makeup. (I buy water purified through steam distillation–distilled water–at the grocery store.) Next, dry face partially (not fully) with Handheld Mini Fan (at Amazon). Next, to lock in moisture, tap Vaseline Triple Purified Petroleum Jelly (at Amazon, Target) onto cheekbones and smile lines. If preferred, use Nourish Organic Shea Butter (at Amazon). Lastly, dry face fully with Handheld Mini Fan (at Amazon). Let jelly/butter set for 15 minutes before going onto Step 12.
NOTE: The petroleum jelly I use is triple purified, and therefore is rated #1 on EWG Hazard/Data Availability Scale–the same as organic shea butter. I now rotate triple-purified petroleum jelly with organic shea butter, so that I don’t become allergic to either one (in particular shea butter), as I have to some other organic butters and oils.

(ABOVE) I transfer small portions of petroleum jelly, shea butter, etc. into smaller, one-ounce glass jars (at Amazon) to keep the contents of the larger, primary jars clean.
STEP 12
Pat Off Excess Petroleum Jelly or Butter

(ABOVE) After letting petroleum jelly (or butter) set for 15 minutes, gently tap off excess with clean, dry finger tip.

Two-Sided, Adjustable-Height Mirror (at Amazon)
STEP 13
Apply Lip Color

(ABOVE) Apply Honest Beauty Creme Cheek + Lip Color, Rose Pink (at Ulta, Amazon, Target). I prefer using a lip brush, so I can line my lips first and then fill them in. This Sigma brush is no longer available. However, I recently purchased a lip brush I prefer, because it includes a fine pointed brush for lining on one side and a small, flat brush on the other side for filling in. It’s the Gold Dual-Ended Retractable Lip Brush (at Amazon)–and I absolutely love it!

STEP 14
Apply Lip Gloss

(ABOVE & BELOW) Apply Lawless Forget The Filler Lip Plumper Line-Smoothing Gloss in Rosy Outlook (at Sephora). Cruelty free and vegan, this gloss is rated “Clean at Sephora” (brands formulated without phthalates, formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers, oxybenzone and octinoxate, and more). Also shown: Kendra Scott 14k Gold Pave Diamond Band Ring.
NOTE: I purchased Lawless Forget the Filler Lipgloss because it has the Clean at Sephora Seal. According to Sephora, the Clean Seal ensures this brand’s products are formulated without certain ingredients that are potentially harmful to human health and the environment and also address ingredients clients are concerned about, including phthalates, formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers, oxybenzone and octinoxate, hydroquinone, triclosan, coal tar, methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, insoluble plastic microbeads, and more.
Environmental Working Group (EWG) gives Lawless Forget the Filler Lipgloss a #5 out of 10 (moderate) rating on their hazard/data-availability scale. This is due to possible allergy, immunotoxicity, and use restriction concerns.
I will continue to use it for now, since I very much like the finish and moisturizing it provides, but I also am looking for a better EWG-rated gloss. 🙂

(ABOVE) The finished look! As I said earlier, I wouldn’t keep the mascara looking like this. I would comb it out so it isn’t clumpy. However, I thought you would want to see how thick and long it can make your lashes.

Love this! I needed that. Thank you!!!!
Thank you, Christy. I’m so happy you found it useful!
I really did not know that what I put on my face is absorbed into my body until your blog. Keep spreading your health tips, so important.
Meredith, I didn’t either! I wish I had known this when I was a teenager. I think I would’ve done a lot of things differently! However, I feel very grateful to know it now, because at least I can make changes armed with that knowledge.
Hi Janis,
I hope that you are doing well! Thank you for another great tutorial. The look is lovely! You wanted luminosity; and you got it! What a beautiful finish! I purchased most of what you featured (A couple of items I purchased from the previous video). I’ve not had good luck with powdered foundation, but, I’m going to give the “Mineral Fusion” a try. Can’t wait to try the rest! I really need a lift today! Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! Love and light, Sarah❤
Sarah, I hope you love the mineral fusion foundation. I really do! No matter what foundation I’m using, I always have to make sure my skin is well moisturized. So as long as you do that, I would think you would have good results with the foundation. I hope you and your husband and family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Love and light back~ Janis
Hi Janis!
I love your makeup tutorials. I’m a creature of habit and have been using the same products forever but your video makes me want to try something new.
Thanks for all the great ideas!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Thank you, Claudia! I’m so happy it gave you some new ideas! Hope you’re having a happy, peaceful Thanksgiving weekend.
Hi Janis,
Your tutorials are always fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience.
As I am also always looking for clean, green products this video was a treat.
Having said that I struggle to find a great natural mascara. Everything I’ve tried, always ends up
flaky, dry and not lengthening the eyelashes. Now that you have used the Honest mascara and primer
for some time I wonder how it holds up. I would appreciate and I’m curious to hear your answer.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Paola
Hi, Paola! Oh my gosh, yes, I can recommend this mascara! I have now worn it several times and it has not flaked off onto my face. It stays put very well. It is definitely my favorite mascara so far (I use it with the primer on top lashes and just mascara on lower lashes). I hope you are having a happy, peaceful Thanksgiving weekend.
Hi Janis,
Thank you for your response! I’ll now definitely give it a try!
Best – Paola
Paola, I do recommend combing it out while it’s still wet. That may also be why it did not flake off for me.
Good morning,
I have a few questions, please ?
Are you still using the same products and doing the same skincare routine?
How long after you changed your diet did you notice your skin changing? It is flawless. Reminds me of the women in Caribbean.
Also, you are the first woman I have seen mention Jade Holland Cooper. As a Stephens College horse girl, HC is running neck and neck w RL. Classic .
One last …cannot find the blog post that mentioned the vials of fragrances. Can you mention the brand again, please?
Thank you so much.
Blessings to you from the frozen tundra.
Hug a palm tree for me.
Shelly, thank you so much for your questions. Firstly, I have changed my skincare somewhat and I will be going into detail about that in a future blog post and video. Regarding skin changes after changing my diet: Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what my skin was like immediately after changing my diet in 2012, because I was focused on my health issues at the time. My skin becoming clear was an added bonus that I only realized later. Mostly what I noticed was fewer blemishes. Too many fried foods or dairy cause blemishes, and if consumed too often, cause rashes. Regarding Holland Cooper, yes, a gorgeous brand!! Fragrance: yes, back in 2023 I began allowing myself to wear a fragrance once or twice a week. Often, I go weeks without wearing any fragrance. I just wanted to be able to have an indulgence once in a while.
Which brings me to a change in my diet, too.
As I have discussed before, since 2012 I had been off of wheat, corn, oatmeal (most grains except rice), sugar/sweeteners, dairy, fried foods, and processed meats. The reason for this dramatic adjustment to my diet was to heal my body of asthma (I had been hospitalized in the emergency room four times), chronic heart burn, a chronically inflamed bladder, and several other health issues. A blood test in 2020 further revealed that my body doesn’t tolerate eggs, quinoa or coconut well either, so I went off of those, too.
Because my health improved (no heartburn, bladder issues or asthma symptoms since 2012), as of July 2023 I began allowing myself to occasionally indulge in eggs, wheat (unbuttered toast, bagel, biscuit, graham cracker, animal cracker, croissant, or scone), bacon, or french fries (or olive oil potato chips). The other major change is, instead of quinoa, I now eat millet.
Occasionally, I have also been allowing myself to have a dessert and or/dairy. For example, at a Christmastime dinner out I ordered spaghetti bolegnese (contains dairy) and for dessert, I chose ice cream. I haven’t had either since then, but I have had an almond scone at an afternoon tea (contains sweetened almond paste) and, at other times, a slice of apple pie or something similar. The point is, I don’t eat a rich, sugary wheat-heavy or dairy-heavy desserts like these–are even graham crackers or a plain scone–every day. I make sure, in fact, that several days a week are completely “clean”.
The reason for this change is simple: I felt like I was so rigid with my diet, I was missing out on living a normal life. I never allowed myself, ever, to indulge even a little. I even stayed away from social events simply because I didn’t want to cause problems for the hostess.
Although the term “life balance” is a term that is so overused I really don’t like applying it here, it is the only term that can best describe what I want not only in my diet but also in my life.
Whenever I read about the lifestyles of centenarians, I don’t think I have ever heard of one single person completely staying away from all foods that are not necessarily the healthiest. All of the centenarians I have seen in interviews admit to enjoying some sort of “vice,” if you will–from ice cream to smoking. I, personally, have no intention of indulging in something as clearly dangerous as smoking, but to each his/her own. For centenarians, what seems to be common among all of them is a happy, positive, hopeful, and lighthearted outlook on life–which includes little indulgences like so-called no-so-healthy foods once in a while (but not overdoing it either).
My hope and goal with this change is that it will help me to lead the most healthy–and balanced–lifestyle I can. Whether or not I will continue on this particular path, I really am not sure, but for now this is what I am trying out.
~ Janis
