My Hair, Skin and Nail Care
Oh my goodness, I have not talked about my skincare or haircare since 2016, and during the last 10 years quite a lot has changed. So, I am finally getting around to discussing it today.
In this post and video I go into detail about all of my hair, skin and nail care, and both my morning and evening routines.
All of the products I use rate #3 or lower on the EWG (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep Hazard/Toxicity Scale.
The EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale Rating System is as follows: 1-2 low hazard; 3-6 moderate; 7-10 high hazard.
If you would like a detailed explanation of how and when I use each of the products, you might want to view my video at the bottom of this post.
Wishing you all a peaceful weekend.

My Skin Care

(ABOVE) Here I am showing one of the three moisturizers I use after cleansing my face, patting it dry, and spritzing with either purified water or my JLJ Before and After Makeup Spray Mist (I give recipe below and talk more about it in the video). Note: I do not wash my face in the morning (see more about this in my video).
I rotate these moisturizers–and three lip treatments–so that (hopefully) I will not become allergic to any of the ingredients. I use one moisturizer and lip treatment for two or three days in a row, and then switch to another moisturizer and lip treatment for two or three days, etc. I go into detail about both my morning and my nighttime routines, the EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale, the difference between the moisturizers and lip treatments I use, and much more in my video at the bottom of the page. Below are all of the products I am currently using.

Sleep & Glow Omnia Pillow (This pillow was sent to me by Omnia, and I have been sleeping on it since March 2024. I will not use anything else. It cradles my neck when I am on my back and, when I am on my side, it prevents my face from getting scrunched and lined.😧)

Andrew Lessman Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails (I have been taking this supplement for about two years.)

Honest Organic-Cotton Baby Washcloths (I use these with just water to cleanse my face at night; they are gentler on skin than regular washcloths.)

Carolina Castile Soap Bars, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I use this soap on my face and body; I only use on my face on days I wore makeup; otherwise, I cleanse with just water and Organic-Cotton Washcloths.)

Cerave Moisturizing Cream, Unscented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this moisturizer with the other two; I use on face, neck, chest, hands, and body; also Amazon.)

Cerave Intensive Moisturizing Cream, Unscented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this moisturizer with the other two; I use on face, neck, chest, hands, and body.)

Olay Regenerist Ultra Rich Hydrating Moisturizer, Unscented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this moisturizer with the other two; I use on face, neck, chest.)

Vaseline Lip Therapy, Unscented (Rated #2 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this lip treatment with the other one or petroleum jelly; I apply to lips after moisturizer; I also sometimes use this on the wrinkles around my eyes and mouth.)

Aquaphor Healing Balm Stick, Unscented (Rated #2 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this lip treatment with the other one or petroleum jelly; I apply to lips after moisturizer; I also sometimes use this on the wrinkles around my eyes and mouth.)

Vaseline Original Healing Jelly, Triple Purified, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I rotate this with the other lip treatments; I apply to lips after moisturizer; I also sometimes use this on the wrinkles around my eyes and mouth; also here.)

4-Ounce Blue Glass Spray Bottle (After cleansing and patting my face dry, I use this spray bottle to spritz my face with purified water–which I buy in large jugs at the grocery store–before applying moisturizer and lip treatment.)

Suntegrity 30spf Mineral Sunscreen, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; also Amazon.)

Suntegrity 30spf BB Cream Sunscreen, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; also Amazon.)

Sloggers Women’s Wide-Brim Sun Hat (I wear this hat on days when I am not wearing makeup.)

2 oz. Clear Glass Spray Bottle (I use this spray bottle to spritz my face with my JLJ Before & After Makeup Spray Mist–before applying moisturizer and lip treatment. See recipe below.)

BellaJade Makeup Setting Spray, Unscented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I combine this with The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, with Ceramides, Unscented to make my JLJ Before & After Makeup Spray Mist. See recipe below.)

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, with Ceramides, Unscented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I combine this with BellaJade Makeup Setting Spray, Unscented to make my JLJ Before & After Makeup Spray Mist. See recipe below.)

Eo Organic Deoderant Spray (EWG rated #1; I use this only when I go out; I do not use deoderant at home.)
My JLJ Before & After Makeup Spray Mist Recipe

(ABOVE) My JLJ Before & After Makeup Spray Mist recipe: Into empty 2 ounce Clear Glass Spray Bottle, combine 50 drops The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, with Ceramides, Unscented with BellaJade Makeup Setting Spray, Unscented filled to top of glass bottle. I use this on days I wear makeup. I apply it before moisturizer and lip treatment and after applying all of my makeup.
My Hair Care & Styling

(ABOVE) One of the biggest changes I have made during the past several years is that I wash my hair with shampoo only when I feel I need it (usually not more than every four to ten weeks). In between, I wash just with water. When I do use shampoo, I rotate between two different products. Vanicream Hair Shampoo, Unscented is rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale and is wonderful for sensitive skin. However, it is a bit more drying than Herbal Essences Argan Oil Repair & Strength Shampoo. This one is rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale–probably because it is scented. However, the floral scent is one of the reasons I really like it–and it is also less drying.
Note: After shampoo I do not use a conditioner. Instead, I prefer an apple cider vinegar rinse. It balances the pH of my hair and makes it silky smooth and easy to detangle. Recipe: In plastic cup, combine 2 tablespoons Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with 12 ounces water. Pour over hair. Wait one minute, then rinse.
Something else I use to clean my scalp and hair without shampoo is a Hand-Held Filtered Shower Head. It has three settings, and one is a powerful, more dense spray that gives a terrific massage. It also leaves my scalp feeling as clean as if I have used shampoo. According to the description online, the filtration beads remove heavy metals and chlorine, and also help to adjust the pH value of the water to a slightly alkaline state, which is good for the skin and hair.

Vanicream Hair Shampoo, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale.)

Herbal Essences Argan Oil Repair & Strength Shampoo, Scented (Rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale.)

Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (After shampooing my hair, I use this apple cider vinegar rinse instead of conditioner: In plastic cup, combine 2 T. vinegar with 12 oz. water. Pour over hair. Wait 1 minute, then rinse.)

Hand-Held Filtered Shower Head With 3 Spray Modes

Cliganic Organic Argan Oil, 2 oz. (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I use argan oil on my hair before styling it. It smooths down the frizzy texture and adds shine; also Whole Foods.)

Boao Brow & Lash Spoolie & Comb With Lid (I use this spoolie to apply argan oil to my extremely baby-fine hair before styling it.)

Four Reasons Sensitive Super Strong Hair Spray, Unscented (Rated #1 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I use this when I style my hair in a bun or want big, full hair after curling it. It gives a strong hold and adds shine.)

Sexy Hair Big Altitude Blow Dry Mousse, Scented (Rated #2 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale; I apply this to my hair, comb through, let air dry before curling with Hot Rollers. It keeps my curls longer and smells divine.)

GHD Original Styler 1” Flat Iron (I recently began using this to smooth out my hair before curling it. I use on air-dried hair, after applying Argan Oil and then Setting Mousse.)

Conair Ceramic Hot Rollers (Similar to mine, which are 20+ yrs. old.)
My Hand Care

(ABOVE) I have found that the key to keeping my hands and nails from being dry is to wash them as little as possible. For that reason, I wear Latex-Free Dish Gloves (others for less here) and 100% Cotton Gloves inside them whenever I open the mail, read a newspaper, clean the house, wash dishes, or prepare fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry or fish. The cotton gloves keep my hands from perspiring and also give my hands extra protection from the very hot water I use to wash dishes.
Whenever I go out I wear hand cream, rotating between Cerave Moisturizing Cream or Cerave Intensive Moisturizing Cream. Both are unscented and are rated #3 on EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale. When I want my hands and nails to look luminous, I add to the hand cream Vaseline Original Healing Jelly, Triple Purified, Unscented.
As for nail polish, I do not wear it. I am not against ever wearing it–in fact, I keep meaning to try out one of the natural nail polishes I bought a few years ago. However, I just never seem to find the time to actually sit down, apply the polish, and then let it dry. If I ever do try wearing it again (the last time was about 25 years ago), it will only be occasionally–to avoid drying out my nails or making them yellow.

For similar monogrammed charm: 14k Engravable Disc Charm (13mm, 15mm or 18mm) with 14k 8mm Push-Gate Charm Connector.
My (Clean) Laundry Care

Nellie’s Laundry Soda, Unscented (EWG rated #1; for sensitive skin; love this for our laundry; 200 Loads; more sizes available.)

Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Bar Soaps, Unscented (EWG rated #1 and also EWG Verified; I use this soap to spot-treat tough stains before putting the treated item in washing machine.)

My Makeup

(ABOVE) This screenshot from the video shows my makeup indoors, with studio lights, using my 10-year-old Canon 70D Camera; and (BELOW) this one shows me two hours later in my car, with natural lighting, using the video mode of the back-facing (non-selfie/better) camera on an iPhone 11pro.

(ABOVE) Here, I am in my car about two hours after filming this video. I generally wear makeup only one or two times a week–at the most, perhaps three. I do this to keep from putting too many products on my skin that are not necessary.
I wore the same makeup products throughout this post and video. Each item is listed below and rates #3 or lower on the EWG (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep Hazard/Toxicity Scale. EWG Skin Deep Hazard Scale Rating System: 1-2 low hazard; 3-6 moderate; 7-10 high hazard.

Hi Janis,
I hope this finds you and hubby doing well. Thank you for sharing your skin care routine. I, also, use Cereve. Awhile back, I believed high-end skin care products were the answers for better skin. Well, I was so wrong. I decided to look into drugstore vs department store skin care. Well, I found out, the hard way, that if I purchased expensive skin care, I was not doing my skin any favors. I now pay more attention to ingredients as opposed to the more expensive products. Yes, I go to my local CVS and Amazon for my skin care. What prompted me to do that was the fact that my skin was very sensitive to the ingredients in the high-end items. I love Cereve, and, because of you, I use Vaseline religiously!
My fine lines around my eyes, and on and around my lips, look better than they ever did. I read up on skin care regularly. Actually, I’ve learned a lot from you! Thank you very much for sharing your experience! Many Blessings, your friend from Boston, Sarah🙏💖
Dear Sarah, yes! I so agree what is important is the ingredients, not the glamour or luxury packaging of the product. I have found the same regarding hypoallergenic ingredients being best for my sensitive skin. I am so happy to hear that Cerave and Vaseline’s petroleum jelly work well for you as well. They really are great products for people who want to use safe products and avoid allergens. Many blessings back to you in Boston.🥰 ~ Janis
Hi Janis
I have been following your blog and charming videos for quite some time, here in the U.K.
Your kind gentle approach, beautiful speaking voice and natural beauty and elegance are a welcome breath of fresh air online. In general, I tend to avoid Social Media because it can be rather a toxic experience at times. You are one of the wonderful exceptions, and I always look forward to the joy your videos bring and how much I learn from you about elegance and understated style.
I have been yearning for you to post an up to date video on your skin and hair care routine, and this week my wish was granted. I learned so much, and I intend to watch the video again tomorrow and take notes on the products that I may be able to purchase here in England. So grateful and appreciative of the work and detail you put into this video, carefully describing your routines and listing the products that work for you. They certainly do work too, you are absolutely radiant and beautiful.
You are such a lovely person Janis, inside and out, and it shines through in your videos. My husband agreed how elegant and ladylike you are, and these are rarer qualities these days. As I navigate my early 50s, I find your style and approach to good health and natural beauty really so inspiring.
Apologies for such a long rambling comment, but I had to express my sincere thanks to you for such helpful and positive videos and blog writings.
Warmest wishes
Caroline (Hampshire, UK) XX💕
Dear Caroline, I am so very humbled by your kind comment. Thank you. I completely understand why you avoid social media. Even though I do post on it, I also for the most part avoid it for the same reason you mention. There are a few accounts I follow here and there, because I find them helpful and happy places. I am so grateful and honored that you find my blog and videos helpful and peaceful, too. As for your concern that your comment is rambling…not at all. No. In fact, it is such a beautifully written, heartfelt message, I cherish it. Thank you again so much for taking the time to write it. Warmest wishes back to you in Hampshire, UK, Caroline. ~ Janis
Hi Janis,
I just wanted you to know that Gabriel no longer features Bamboo powder foundation. I contacted them and they actually changed Bamboo to Light Beige. I saw no difference when I purchased the Light Beige powder foundation. I have been using Gabriel since I started watching your channel! I am very grateful for viewing your wonderful channel! I so enjoy your beautiful OFD’s! You emulate beauty and grace. Keep on keeping on, Janis! Your Boston friend, Sarah🙏💖👠👒👢👜
Sarah, thank you so much for letting me know! I am down to the bottom of my compact and will need to re-order soon. I so appreciate you confirming that the color is the same, and just the name changed. How wonderful and lucky I am that you use the same color! Thank you again, my Boston friend!🌸
Sarah, I emailed Gabriel customer service regarding their Powder Foundation in the Bamboo shade, and I received this message back:
“Thank you so much for reaching out, unfortunately Bamboo has been discontinued. While Light Beige is also in the light to medium range, they are two different shades. Bamboo had neutral undertones, while Light Beige has cooler undertones. To help you find your best match, we recommend using the ‘Find My Shade’ tool located on the product page. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything further. ~ Warmly, Amanda Woodstrom, Brand Manager, Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc.”
So, it looks like I will be searching for a new shade, since I am almost out of Bamboo. Thank you again for letting me know it has been discontinued. Wishing you a Happy Easter! ~ Janis
Thank you for this video. Very helpful. I also have many allergies to skin care products. Always a struggle.
Dear Jeanne, I am so sorry you struggle with allergies to skin care products, too. I completely sympathize with you. It’s very frustrating. 😧
Hi Janis!
I use the Olay moisturizer in the red little jar on my face too!
Also love your Yurman Chatelaine ring.. I sound like a jewelry stalker! lol.
Anyways.. have a wonderful holiday!!
Claudia
Hi, Claudia! It’s so nice to see you again! Isn’t it a lovely cream? It feels so rich when I apply it. It makes me feel quite pampered. The Chatelaine ring is a pretty thing, I agree. I stalked it myself for quite a while 🤩 Wishing you a wonderful Easter today as well. ~ Janis
