PRADA RE-EDITION 2005 BAG

The Saffiano Leather Prada Re-Edition 2005 Bag

The Prada Re-Edition 2005 bag, which debuted in 2019, returns again this spring in a variety of styles, including saffiano leather, nylon trimmed with saffiano leather, and crochet with leather detailing. All three are reinterpretations of the Prada Nylon Bag from 2005, which was a simple nylon shoulder bag with silver-tone hardware.

Saffiano Leather Or Nylon?

The Saffiano-Leather Prada Re-Edition 2005 comes with two removable straps: a short, gold shoulder-chain strap and an adjustable, nylon-web shoulder/crossbody strap. It also comes with a clip-on coin purse and keychain-clochette bag charm–both in saffiano leather.

I bought the Prada Re-Edition 2005 (Saks Fifth Avenue, June 2022), because I wanted a bag that I could carry for both casual or dressy occasions. I chose the saffiano leather instead of nylon, because saffiano leather is more durable and, I think, a bit more versatile. Particularly when carried with just the gold shoulder chain, the saffiano-leather Re-Edition 2005 easily can be worn with a little black cocktail dress.

For fun, casual looks I sometimes clip the coin purse to the zipper pull (and use it for my keys), but it also can be attached to the web strap or to one of the gold d-rings on either side of the handbag. Repels Water & Stains; & Versatile

I also like that the saffiano leather does not show stains or scratches the way some other leathers can, and it repels water well (although, I do prefer not to carry any leather bag on a rainy day). What I like most about this bag, however, is its small size. This allows it to look good carried three different ways: over the crook of my arm, over my shoulder, or crossbody. When carried with the gold chain it looks elegant, and when worn with the web strap it looks cute and casual. It is so versatile.

The Cons

Of course, because of the smaller size, I do have to pair down when it comes to contents. I use a card holder, not a wallet, and a few loose tissues, instead of a tissue holder, etc. Also, something I learned the hard way: keep the bag away from anything that might degrade the coating on the saffiano leather. A few weeks ago, after returning home from lunch out with my husband, I noticed the bag was now sticky on one corner. Neither of us had consumed anything that might cause this, such as syrup, fruit or a sweetened beverage, and I was at a loss as to what had gotten on my bag. I tried wiping it with a soft, water-dampened cloth, to no avail, so I then used a gentle leather cleaner. While this lessened the stickiness somewhat, the bag is still a little sticky on one corner.

My best guess is that I must have touched the bag with my hands after spraying them with hand sanitizer, which is organic, sugar-cane alcohol. Usually I am very careful about letting my hands dry before touching my handbag or its contents. In the future, I will try to be much more conscientious about making sure my hands are thoroughly dry before touching anything with them. Lesson learned.

The Handbag

(ABOVE) What I like most about the Prada Re-Edition 2005 Bag is the size. It looks beautiful as a dressy bag when carried with the gold chain. However, when worn with the accompanying web strap it looks like a cute, more casual bag.
