I bought this white cotton skort about 20 years ago at The Limited. It’s the shortest item I own, and I still wear it–casually, to run quick errands and, while I’m at it, get some sun on my legs (and vitamin D). I’m showing it here, because there is much talk lately about appropriate lengths of skirts, shorts, and dresses for women over 50. A skort as short as this one, many would say, is not age appropriate.
Most recently the topic was addressed by Melissa55–a gorgeous over-60 YouTube beauty guru with seven grandchildren–after a critical comment was left on one of her videos. Her heartfelt YouTube response got me asking myself, what guidelines do I use to decide what I will wear?
In this five-minute video, I talk about my answer to that question–and show you my outfit. (For the record, I think at 61 Melissa55 looks just as terrific as any 20 year old in everything she wears.)
How do you feel about dressing age appropriate?

(ABOVE AND BELOW) What I like about this skort is that it has a skirt on the front and back, too, which keeps the look feminine from all views.
(ABOVE) My Talbots sandals and top are in the color Persian Pink.
(ABOVE) This sweet necklace was a gift from one of my brothers more than 20 years ago. See a similar one Saks Fifth Avenue or, alternatively, Zale’s.
(ABOVE AND BELOW) On my lips is Nourish Organic Shea Butter with Hemp Organics/Colorganics Lip Tint in Berry. I also use the shea butter on my eye area, face, hands, elbows, and feet. It’s a great, all-around 100 percent-organic moisturizer.

Ok, I’ve been wanting to address this for a long time. We are not the same as our mothers were. Women have crashed through barriers left and right. At my age, my mother was sitting at home knitting. I’m doing Hunter/Jumper on my horse, which by the way I didn’t start till age 60! I’m slim, my hair has very few gray hairs, I keep active and have been married to,the same wonderful man for 40 years. Some people think women of a certain age should all wear elastic waist pants and thick rubber sole shoes. Not me, and never has been my style to dumb myself down so others feel comfortable. Has anyone else heard that insulting phrase about women who look 16 from behind and 60 in the front? We are a generation of women who fought for what should have been God given rights regardless of age, sex or Faith. We will not wear frumpy clothes and hide ourselves away in case we offend a younger woman. Nor are we invisible. I dress in classic with a twist clothing. I don’t wear short shorts or mini skirts..that’s my choice, but I applaud women who aren’t ashamed to be who they are. BTW! I live in Santa Barbara..I constantly see young and not so young women dressing as though they have no self esteem and call it fashion. They look as though they rolled out of bed and schlumped to the store. I don’t even go to the mailbox without mascara and a little lipstick. I guess I made my point. As women, we should support each other, not tear each other down. Thank you
Melanie, thank you for your comment! Your zeal and passion are terrific. I so agree how important it is that women support each other. Thank you for sharing your opinion here! ~Janis

Age – appropriate, don’t wear white after Labor Day, and no sleeveless anything are ancient rules that no longer make sense to the women of today. Jill , you look beautiful in all your vlogs. I am always drawn to the painterly colors you use in your outfits.
