DRESSING FOR A WARM-WEATHER NOVEMEBER
Welcome Back Snow Birds and Now The Holidays–and Season–Begin!
It’s Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S., which is basically the beginning of season here in Naples, Florida. What exactly is season? Generally, it’s when the temperature finally drops from the hot and humid 90s Fahrenheit into the upper 70s and low 80s, and the air is much less damp.
For that reason, many Naples residents who spent summer at their second (or third or fourth) homes have been arriving back in town during the last month or so. We call them snowbirds. Typically, they stay for the winter and all its social activities, then leave around mid-May. (High season, which is our busiest time of year, begins in January).
I love this time of year, because the town is absolutely buzzing and the shopping centers are busy putting up (or completing) their holiday decorations. There is nothing quite like twinkling white lights on swaying palm trees.
Behind The Scenes of Building a Christmas Tree
Rain was forecast the day my friend *CSG and I met for lunch at M Waterfront Grille–come to think of it, it was forecast the last time we met, too–but luckily it held off until later that evening, and we were gifted with a pretty, although slightly overcast, day in the lower 80s (Fahrenheit).
The restaurant is located in the Parkshore area of Naples at The Village on Venetian Bay, overlooking the bay to the north and south and, to the west, the beach road and its condominiums.
Several men were putting up the shopping center’s Christmas tree when I arrived, and it was so fun to see what the tree looked like mid-construction. It was lovely from the front–and with all its pretty metallic-gold and red bows appeared finished–but on the backside, it was still completely bare of its tree limbs. (For a peek, see my screenshots below from the video.)
The tree had its official lighting yesterday, so if you would like to see some pretty holiday lights, that’s one good place to visit.
Lunch at M Waterfront Grille and Health Food-Choice Compromises
I usually order a salad when out for lunch, and at the Grille I chose their Tuna Nicoise Salad. I would have preferred an organic meat, chicken or wild-caught shrimp, salmon or sardines on my salad, which is how I eat when at home. (Wild-caught salmon and sardines are lowest in toxicity of all fish.) However, these weren’t available, so I went with the tuna. If I tried to be as strict with my diet at restaurants as I am when I’m at home, I’d seldom be able to go out for meals with friends. (For more on why I avoid certain foods, see my post, Healing Chronic Health Issues: What I Eat and Why.)
I asked our server what she recommended for someone who doesn’t like her fish raw or too cooked and therefore dry. She suggested to go with medium, and I’m glad I took her advice. It was moist, but not raw. Meanwhile, CSG ordered the Grilled Cheese, which comes with a side salad. (See their lunch menu here.)
About This Pencil Skirt
Now, getting to my outfit, and in particular this chino pencil skirt. What makes it extra fun is that it’s embellished on the front with black bugle beads. It’s adorable! Although the on-line photograph of the (tall) model makes it look short, it isn’t at all. It’s actually 23.5″ in length and is knee-length on me. (I’m 5’8.5″, and I ordered the misses size 2.)
Although I’ve styled it to be casual, if you switched out my denim shirt for one in white and added a black blazer or black cardigan and black pumps, it would work well for an office environment, too.
Have a great week!

(ABOVE) From afar, the Christmas tree appeared to be completed .
(BELOW) On the back of the tree, men were still inserting tree limbs. The construction of the tree was fascinating.
(ABOVE & BELOW) Although it was an overcast day, the view from our table at M Waterfront Grille was still very pretty.
(ABOVE) One reason why I love this hat and this style of tote is because both can be draped on the back of a chair when I’m at a restaurant. It makes things so much easier! The bag also comes in a slightly smaller size that looks identical to this one and also has the shoulder straps.
(ABOVE & BELOW) Mid-meal, I realized I’d forgotten to film what CSG and I had ordered. She chose the Grilled-Cheese Sandwich and I the Tuna Nicoise salad, and I brought my own dressing.
