I see a lot of discussion on the internet about whether a woman over 40 can or even should wear skinny jeans. I think it has nothing to do with age. The better question to ask is, do I like what I see when I put on a pair and look at myself in a mirror (or see myself in a photograph). If yes is the answer, great. If no is the answer (because too much is pushing out over the top), maybe try sizing up, before nixing them altogether. I really think it’s that simple.
Every modern classic woman has her own barometer for determining what she considers good taste. Some like to wear their skirts a little shorter, others their blouses a little lower and, still others, their pants a little tighter. And alll of us consider ourselves classic-loving traditionalists.
Thank goodness for variety. ~Janis Lyn Johnson

Enjoyed column –
Thanks, Myra!
GREAT post. I totally agree with your thinking. Age has nothing to do with looking great and felling comfortable. You look comfortable wearing your skinny jeans and you certainly look amazing Love your entire look. I’m over 50 and still love wearing skinny jeans paired with a cute pair of Tory flat.
Thanks for sharing your amazing fashion sense.
Bri
Thank you, Brian, for stopping by my blog. And also thank you for taking the time to share such a kind comment!
Hi there! Just discovered your utube videos and had to immediately subscribe! I am subscribed to only two others – both women over 50 – and I love to see women of my age (I’m 57) feeling confident and beautiful with their unique styles of dressing classicly in well made clothing that never goes out of style. I still wear some pieces that I’ve had since college! I get compliments on these pieces just as much as I do with newer items! I’m about 5 ft 5 inches tall and weigh 116 – the same weight since high school but I’m 2 inches shorter now! I feel most comfortable in black not-too-skinny ankle pants, linen anything, fitted tops with looser bottoms, fitted bottoms with looser tops, cardigans with anything – because I AM from the South you know! – Mobile, AL. I definitely understand the importance of monogrammed pillowcases, handkerchiefs for my husband, table linens, and even find it very charming to have (or design) a sort of “family crest” monogram that is used for all of these things! You are an inspiration to me and I get lots of ideas from your videos! We are very similar in body type and clothing preferences. Our faces and hair are even similar! My hair is long and I still get ash blonde highlights put in though! I’m not quite ready to go fully natural with the gray although I have considered it! I love your channel! Keep the great videos coming!
How terrific you are wearing some items from college! Classics are so timeless! Also, how great you are the same weight as in high school. You must take good care of yourself. I love your comment, “cardigans with anything – because I AM from the South you know!” I could hear your wonderful, slow accent as I read it. I LOVE southern American accents! I have seen family crests and always liked the idea of them. How did you go about having yours designed/made? Thank you for commenting. It’s so nice to meet you, Karen from Alabama. ~Janis
Hi Janis! Nice to meet you too. You asked how I went about designing our “family” monogram. Well – I went to a local boutique that sells locally-made handcrafted items (such as smocked baby clothing and makeup bags) that they will monogram free of charge. You can also bring in your own items and they will monogram ANYTHING for 7 dollars an item! I looked through their monogram “books” and picked out a 3-letter script-style monogram then added an Old English-style border to go on each of the four sides of the lettering. That’s it! I used the same border with a block-style “D” for some things (such as my husband’s handkerchiefs and even an etched glass candle!) and used my own 3 initials in script with the same border for my own personal things (a tote for example). Easy! I picked it out and they had my order ready in a few days time. There are several of these type boutiques in my area so I “shopped around” for something I really liked. Did you know that there is a certain order for a couple’s script monogram? The woman’s first initial, followed by the surname initial, followed by the man’s first initial. I didn’t know this until the shop lady informed me! Please keep making more videos, Janis! Love to watch them and get ideas on how to pair things that I already have in my closet! Take care,
Karen
Karen, thank you. I will have to find out if any boutique here does the same. I would love to see a monogram “book”. There must be someone. I love the idea! ~Janis
