Laura Connor is an Italian who lives six months in Cap d’ Ail, outside Monaco, and six months in the U.S. (between Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Naples, Florida; and Maui, Hawaii).
I noticed her at Waterside Shops in Naples late one afternoon, because her outfit made me feel so happy. I liked the contrast of white, slim shorts with a bright pink sweater and cheerful-print shirt with sleeve hems and shirttail exposed.
When I asked to take her picture, she agreed but surprised me when she apologized for her appearance. She said she had just gotten off the golf course, had tossed on rubber thongs without changing, and was stopping for an hour at Waterside, before picking up her mother.
I love wearing shorts, but I often dress them down. My favorite summer grocery-store wear is loose-fitting Bermudas with a tee or polo and sandals. That’s fine, but I like a change, too. Laura demonstrated one formula for how to dress casually, yet increase the style quotient: Keep everything slim-fitting; colors bright and crisp; accessories high quality, but minimal; and then, let your shirttail show and push up your sweater arms for a flattering, three-quarter-sleeve look. ~Janis Lyn Johnson
