When you talk about wardrobe classics, among those at the top of the list is the trench coat. Its early beginnings reach as far back as the 1820s, but it was during WWI, when sporting wear was combined with military gear to protect British officers from cold, damp weather conditions, that the trench began taking the shape of what we see today. (For more on its fascinating history, see Smithsonian.org)
I have been on the hunt for a trench for about two years. I liked this one because it wasn’t a jacket and it wasn’t a long coat, but was somewhere in between. Even more important, the weight of the fabric is substantial but not heavy (or hot)–and the lining can be removed. An added bonus was the removable hood. Also, it was on sale. I was sold. ~Janis Lyn Johnson
