DEALING WITH RAINY DAYS & TAKING MAKEUP CHANCES
When It’s a Rainy Day, But I Don’t Want to Dress Like it
For most of the day before I got these outfit shots, it was pouring down rain. I had decided I didn’t want to wear a casual, rainy-day outfit, though–i.e., cropped jeans or pants and rain skimmers–because I was lunching with my friends Gail and *CSG in the (dressy) dining room of the private club to which one of them belongs.
First, I needed to return something to Nordstrom, and luckily there’s an attached garage at Waterside Shops that kept me from getting wet. However, it was still raining once I arrived at my friend’s club–and the walk from the car wasn’t covered.
My Plan B For Managing (Weather-Related) Stress
I could have let the rain cause me stress–who wants to get soaked when they’re all dressed up. Plus, I wanted to vlog my day and film this outfit for this post and video–and do it outside. Also, I was hoping one of my friends might hold my camera for me, and film me–which would give me a much better video. The problem was, much of this wasn’t possible if it was pouring. (A challenging part of shooting outfits by myself is making sure I get my whole outfit both in frame and in focus, even though I can’t see what I’m shooting. That’s why it’s helpful when someone else films me. In fact, you’ll see on my video a whole section where I’m in my car talking to the camera, and my face is halfway out of frame! All this notwithstanding, I love the concept of doing filming and photos myself most of the time, because it’s more real-life.)
The good news is, even with the rain, because I had created a back-up plan (plan B) I was relatively stress free the entire day. The first part of my Plan B was to bring rubber flip flops and a black umbrella with me. So, when I arrived at the club and saw it was still raining, I took off my white leather sandals, put them in a black canvas bag, changed into the flip flops, and trekked from the car to the club, carrying my umbrella. Once inside, I went to the ladies room and combed out my tangled, wind-blown hair, dried off my feet, and switched back into my white sandals. Lunch outfit as planned. Check!
The second part of my Plan B was to let go of the need to film outside (or have a friend help with filming). I knew I could always film back at home inside by myself, like I usually did. Check!
Because I had this mental backup plan B, I was able to relax and enjoy the day, whatever it brought weather-wise. What’s more, the weather cleared and I was able to get my outside shots and video after all. (Gail filmed me with my iPhone 6.) It’s so neat when things just have a way of working out!
My New Eye & Lip Makeup Looks (and Easing Up on Expectations)
Something else that challenged me a little was this eye-makeup look. It was a total experiment, and I decided to try it last minute. My plan B was that I could always just re-do it, if it didn’t work out as I hoped. Luckily, I ended up liking it. Yay. Although it’s a bit dressier eye makeup look than I would typically wear with this kind of outfit, I decided to be more flexible and just go with it. Check! (Life is much easier when I’m not so rigid with my wants and expectations.)
What’s new about my eye makeup is that I did something called the “halo effect” on my eyelids. (I’ve been seeing this technique all over YouTube for the past year or so.) In brief, it’s about applying several different but similar eyeshadow shades onto the lid and crease to create a monochromatic diffusion of color that looks like a halo. (To get my look, I used the bottom two colors from the Gabriel Eyeshadow Trio, Classic Matte Nude palette–the medium tone in my crease, slightly above it and on my mobile lid, the darker tone on the outer corners of my lid, and under my lower lashes.)
Also new for me was combining a lipliner and lipgloss. At least, I don’t remember ever doing it before. (Oh my gosh, where has my mind gone?) For this particular look, I used Zuzu Luxe Lipliner in Innocence, a muted brownish pink/neutral, with Gabriel Lipgloss in Venus, a pink chocolate/cool creme. First, I lined my lips with the lipliner. Then, I applied the gloss all over my lips, staying within the lipliner line. I don’t know why I haven’t done this before when wearing a gloss, because it really did help keep the gloss from migrating.
If any of you would like me to do a GRWM (Get Ready With Me) post and video demonstrating how I got this makeup look, let me know in the comments section, either here or at YouTube or Instagram.
Oh, Those Love Birds On Southern Charm!
Lastly, something else I talk about in my video (besides all of the above), is my favorite reality-television show, Southern Charm. I think it’s fun and entertaining, and it follows the lives of a handful of 30-50-something singles in Charleston, South Carolina (Thursdays–tonight at 9 p.m. EST!–on Bravo TV.)
In particular, I weigh in on the Thomas Ravenel-Kathryn C. Dennis situation. I won’t go into it all here, but let me just say I love these two! (I also think Charleston socialite Patricia Altschul is a hoot.)
If you got this far in my post, thank you so much for reading it all. I hope you like my outfit and eye makeup.
Take care and have a wonderful, safe Memorial Day weekend.
~Janis Lyn Johnson

This white skirt is the perfect length on you! I have been using lip liner with my lip gloss forever! It looks pretty on your lips.
Thank you, Lynne! I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to finally start using a lipliner. I was surprised at how well it actually worked. I agree about knee length being a nice length in a skirt. It’s so comfortable, and it looks good on all shapes and sizes. Thank you for taking the time to comment here! ~ Janis
I love your outfit and t-straps! Your makeup looks great too! I’m so happy I found your videos I love classic style. My husband and I vacationed in Naples a few times and I love visiting with you some of the familiar restaurants and shops as well as learning about new ones. Bravo is one of our favorite restaurants. I recently started watching Southern Charm and I’m enjoying it. I would like to see Thomas and Kathryn get back together too! I look forward to seeing you in your next video! Janie from Long Island NY
Hi, Janie! I’m so happy you enjoyed Naples. It’s such a pretty town. Bravo is a great restaurant. It’s located in the same shopping center as the Whole Foods where I get my organic groceries. Wouldn’t it be sweet if Thomas and Kathryn eventually were able to grow back together? It would take him maturing emotionally enough to finally make a commitment and settle down. Hopefully he will ~ Janis
Love all the information and I have learned so much from the videos
Hey Janis! Loved your makeup in this vlog as well as your outfit. I’ve seen every vlog, but sometimes forget to click the thumbs up. I too have dietary issues and wear the same organic makeup. I also eat and live as healthy and clean as I can and wanted to know if you have any recipes or cookbook you can share that you use? Being gluten intolerant and a diabetic is very challenging. Looking forward to another post! Thank you for your help!
Karen❤️
I enjoyed this post a lot. Thank you. I have also begun wearing lip liner with just gloss. It is new for me also and so far I really like how it wears and feels. I am going to check out the eye look; I like it! It’s dramatic but soft and so I think it translates to day. It’s now hot and humid in New Jersey so the skirts and dresses are out.
Thanks again,
Marge
Awe thank you Janis for your vlog even though it was a wet Naples in Florida as I have experienced the heavy down pours while on holiday there . (or vacation as you say in America) many years ago.
Did you watch the Royal Wedding?I must say I thought it was wonderful and for once proud of the British weather it was glorious all over the UK which believe you me doesn’t happen very often summertime or not.. Great Windsor Park looked stunning and apparently it was estimated to have been about 110,000 well wishers within Windsor town and the Great Park. There were thousands of American visitors waving both the Union Jack and The Stars and Stripes, what love and unity for the world to see. We have taken Meghan under our wing and her sweet mother Doria.
Did you like the fabulous outfits of some of the guests some fantastic and some well um not so fantastic.
Like you I adore classic style with sometimes a bit of whimsy. Some of the colours of the outfits were just gorgeous , pastels or brights just lovely.
In your vlog you wore black and white, one of my favourite combinations as it never dates, the skirt length was just right and kitten heels are my all time favourite. Not to high not to low and I think they really suite you. Your make up is always lovely, understated not heavy even though you wore more eye make up it was subtly applied..
I hope your next vlog is a Florida sunny one to cheer me up as the brief spell of gorgeous weather we had has taken a turn for the worst, it’s now cold and wet , British weather hey it’s the Bain of our lives in U.K. but at least the now Duke and Duchess of Sussex (a title bestowed by our beloved Queen) had glorious sunshine on their special day.
Take care Janis ,
Pamela from Wales UK x
Greetings Janis! I’ve just discovered your blog and am thrilled to find someone who shares my aesthetic! That would have been good enough, but reading your posts about everything we put into and onto our body has been the push I’ve needed to adopt this way of living. I’m having a total knee replacement in 3 weeks and am busy planing meals and buying/ordering new makeup/skincare for my recovery. And all because of you.
My very best,
Babette in Marblehead, MA
You have such fabulous style. I’ve been watching your YouTube videos for a while and I think you once did one on growing out your gray hair. I would love to do that but the idea of the roots is rather unbearable-I am a brunette. What was your process? (I really don’t want to cut my hair short). Thanks again and look forward to watching many, many more vlogs.
I was so amused that you love Southern Charm as much as I do! It’s my secret but I’ll share that with you! You look as fabulous as ever… and your post is so timely with all of this rain!!!
I wanted to say that you are inside and out one of the most elegant, stylish and classy women that I know. I have been meaning to comment and tell you how much i appreciate and enjoy all of your posts and videos. You provided a link to your Plan B in this post for when you are eating out. I really appreciate that and can so relate to what you said. I deal with a lot of food sensitivities myself (I have rheumatoid arthritis that stays in remission as long as i am careful with my diet). Thank you for being you and sharing with others. Please keep it up and know that you help and inspire a lot of other people.
Wishing you the best,
Cathy
Dear Cathy, thank you so much for such a kind compliment. I really do appreciate it. Thank you also for letting me know you can relate to needing to have a Plan B when it comes to taking care of ourselves in restaurants. I’m so happy for you that you have found a diet that keeps RA in remission for you. That is fantastic. It is just so sad that more people don’t know what you have discovered. Every time I see an ad for yet another RA drug, I can’t help but wonder why more people in the medical world aren’t aware of the link between bad diet/bad health/RA/Asthma/Eczema/IC etc. Again, I want to tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to come here and show your support and encouragement, Cathy. Continued good health to you! ~ Janis
Good morning dear Janis. I found support and motivation in YOU and your message. Your lifestyle is an inspiration to us faithful followers of your videos and vlog . Please don’t “abandon” us and quite the opposite, incorporate diet tips on your YOUTUBE channel / videos and vlog. I, myself, believe in what you do and your valuable and positive contribution to us all. Regards and love always. Olga
Hi Janis,
I really appreciate the time and care you put into your blog and videos, especially all of the helpful links. I am also in my 50s and find the videos very inspiring. It can be easy in this chapter of life to become a bit lazy with our self-care, so I’m grateful for reminders in the right direction!
I loved the video you did about diet and your health, and have been wondering how are are travelling in that area – a follow up video would be wonderful!
Madeleine
I have this same prada bag in black, its super versatile!
Oh, I bet it’s gorgeous in black, Jen. Gorgeous! I so agree about it being a versatile bag. Love the choice of both top handles and a shoulder strap. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your comment! ~ Janis
