Lunch and More with My Brother at Food & Thought Organic Market
What a wonderful surprise to have my brother, Mark, from North Carolina, call me on a Sunday night to say he was in town, can we have lunch the next day. It’s been ages since I’ve seen him.
When I asked if I could include him in a vlog, there was silence on the other end of the line. Then he laughed. Then, although I can’t remember what he said, I knew it meant “not a chance, sister.”
At Food and Thought the next day, he said I could film what he ate–thank you for that bone!–but I only remembered to ask after he was almost finished eating. As you’ll see from the photos, his and my plates are not exactly photo-friendly! I get so caught up in being with whomever I’m with that I often do that!
After lunch, he agreed to me taking a quick selfie video of us, so I could at least capture some cute screenshots of us together. Even better, when I sent him the screenshots and video clip, he agreed to let me include them all on the vlog–and in this blog post. Yay!
Maybe it’s because I look like a complete nut in the video. I make absolutely no sense as I try to direct him to pose as if he’s getting his photo taken–even though I’m shooting him on video. What makes it so funny and endearing, is how patient he is. (He’s awfully good looking, too, which doesn’t hurt.)
But getting back to Food & Thought. It’s an organic market where I’ve been shopping since December 2005. It was a wonderful place then and it’s even more wonderful now. They’ve been so successful that they are much larger today, and therefore able to carry even more terrific, healthy goodies.
I hope you enjoy this glimpse of it–and what I bought. I also vlogged before and after lunch, while I ran errands all over town, so that’s new for me.
Thank you for visiting my blog today, and if you have a chance to view the video, please let me know what you think of it. It’s a little different for me.
Cheers!

(ABOVE & BELOW) Gopal’s Sprouted Organic Almond Butter.
I have been buying this brand of organic, raw almond butter (from either Food & Thought or from Amazon) for ages. I love it on apple slices! It’s currently priced at $13.49 at Food & Thought and $15.99 (including shipping) at Amazon. (It’s currently $14.99 plus $5 shipping to my town from Gopal’s, so I prefer Amazon.)
(ABOVE) Blue Mountain Sprouted Raw Organic Pistachios and Walnuts. (BELOW) Wilderness Family Naturals Raw Sprouted Organic Mixed Nuts and Walnuts.
When I’m in a pinch, I buy the Blue Mountain nuts, above, at Food & Thought. But generally I buy the Wilderness Family Naturals Raw Sprouted Organic Mixed Nuts and Walnuts on line, because they are less expensive than Blue Mountain. Currently, a 16 oz bag of either nuts by Wilderness Family Naturals is $21.95 plus $7.90 for shipping (approximate total of $30 for 16 ounce bag of nuts, including shipping). A 14 ounce bag of sprouted organic raw walnuts at Blue Mountain is $30, not including Fed Ex Ground shipping.
Why Raw Sprouted Nuts and Nut Butters?
Nuts and seeds contain enzyme inhibitors that can make them difficult to digest–and cause problems for the digestive system of some people. They also contain phytic acid, which binds to minerals in the digestive track and can contribute to mineral deficiency. Soaking nuts and seeds helps to neutralize the enzyme inhibitors and phytic acid, making them easier for the body to digest them and absorb their nutrients.
(ABOVE) Gabriel Cosmetics.
I have been wearing Gabriel cosmetics for nearly five years. The ingredients are all natural and more healthy than typical drugstore or department store makeup.
(ABOVE) Hampstead Organic Loose Leaf Green Tea.
For convenience, I order this on line. For a package of three of the above-size tins of tea, I pay $23.32, plus $6.99 for shipping. (Total cost of $30.31 for three 3.53-ounce tins of tea.) Since I drink the tea every afternoon, I like buying it in bulk.
(ABOVE) Lydia’s Organic Raw Sprouted Sunflower Caraway Bread.
I bought this “bread” for the first time and loved it. I will say that it’s more like a small, crunchy “toast” than a bread. It doesn’t taste like traditional wheat toast, but I thought it was delicious.

(ABOVE) My brother, Mark’s, lunch (what was left of it!) consisted of salmon, sweet potatoes, and mixed vegetables. (BELOW) My lunch was roasted chicken, greens, and a sweet potato. I gave him the skin from my chicken (which you can see on his plate, above), because I wasn’t certain about the seasoning. Normally I do eat the skin, because it contains healthy fat.

I’ve heard of sprouted grains but didn’t know of sprouted
nuts, thank you for the information.
You are so sweet to say that, Cynthia! Thank you from both my brother and me! Yes, sprouted grains have similar issues, which is why many people prefer to eat them sprouted, too. I eat sprouted organic brown rice, because it’s easier to digest. Thank you for commenting here! Cheers ~ Janis

I have recently discovered your vlog and really enjoy it. I’m wondering how you keep all of your great handbags, shoes, accessories, etc. organized. I also have an abundant supply of great items that I have gathered over the years, but my closet is bursting. I would love it if you shared some tips.
Hi, Lin! Right now my closet is terribly organized, I’m afraid! We live in a space with not very many closets, so “bursting” is the word I would use to describe my situation, too. 🙂 Oh my gosh, if I ever get it presentable I will think about sharing it. Hope you’re having a great Sunday. Cheers ~ Janis

I loved the video. I have a friend who spends the winter in Naples and loves it. Thank you for sharing it in this video. You live in an idyllic place. Thank you also for sharing the food shopping. I eat walnuts a lot but did not know that you could get them sprouted! Your wardrobe and makeup are very similar to my style. I love your vlog and always look forward to it.
Hi, Jo Ann! Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. I’m so happy you like my blog! Thank you for letting me know. 🙂 About the sprouted walnuts…yes, it’s great that you can get them sprouted. They’re a bit more expensive, but much easier than doing it myself, so I do splurge on them. Cheers ~ Janis
