April 18, 2016 / Video Post Notes:
I filmed this video several weeks ago. Just about a week later, I began receiving quite a few questions from viewers and readers. That was and is fantastic–thank you! It’s also why some of those questions are not answered here. I’m so sorry! If you would like me to answer those, too, in a video (and any other questions you might have) in the coming weeks/month(s), please let me know. In the mean time, I hope this video helps you get to know me at least a little better.
Thank you again for reading my blog and watching my videos! ~Janis Lyn Johnson
(ABOVE) Among the questions I’ve been asked is whether I like to collect anything. The answer is, “Yes!” I love collecting china, especially chintzware and tea sets. Examples of fine bone china chintzware include this 100 Years of Royal Albert 1920 Spring Meadow three-piece set (ABOVE) and this New Country Roses Rose Confetti five-piece set, also by Royal Albert (BELOW). Note: If you would like me to do a future post on some of my own china, let me know.
My favorite book? “Coming Home” (ABOVE), which also is available in a DVD (BELOW). I have read the book twice and watched the DVD countless times!
(BELOW) My favorite movie, “You’ve Got Mail”.
(ABOVE) This is the British mini-series version of “Pride and Prejudice,” starring Colin Firth. I’ve watched it at least a dozen times. It’s available at Amazon as DVD, VHS Tape, and Blu-ray. (BELOW) Items similar to favorites I own. (On a smart phone? To see all eight items click side arrow.)
YouTube Video of My Q&A
Thank you so much for inspiring me and so many others. Your taste in clothes is similar to mine but through your videos I have learned to piece outfits together a little differently which makes a big impact not only visually but also mentally. I feel much more confident in my outfits now. There is one small favour I would like to ask. Would you kindly make captioning available on all your videos? I am hearing impaired and was not able to fully appreciate your latest posting. Thank you again for sharing yourself with us.
Lillian, I’m so happy you have found my videos helpful. Thank you for letting me know that! I’m not sure how to make captioning available on videos, but I will definitely look into it. 🙂 Have a great week! ~Janis

What is your best fragrance?
Hi, Elizabeth! For quite a few years now I have been making my own organic fragrance. I place drops of my favorite organic essential oil (patchouli or lavender) in a base of organic coconut oil. The more drops I add, the stronger the fragrance. When it comes to commercial perfumes, I don’t buy them anymore for myself since I prefer to wear all-organic products on my skin. But my mother loves perfume, and I picked out a lovely scent for her that I do really like a lot. I spent an afternoon smelling fragrances and, hands down, found this one was my favorite. It’s quite expensive but lovely. It’s Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle. A very pretty floral fragrance. I’ve bought it for her twice. Thank you for commenting! ~Janis
You have a great style, thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Rebecca. I’m so glad you liked it!! ~Janis
Coming Home is one of by top favorites! Would love to find similar books.
Kate, I’ve never found anyone quite like Rosamunde Pilcher. I wish I could! But there is an American novelist I do like. You might like her, too. You can always look her up and see what you think. Her name is Anne Rivers Siddons. Her wonderful stories take place in the American south. Love her books, too. ~Janis
I really enjoyed “meeting” you! I, too, had the same comments made to me when letting my hair go gray instead of continuing to color it. I didn’t have the confidence to continue growing it out, however, it’s been on my mind to let it return to its natural state. Currently I use a rinse so I can easily let it return. Thank you for sharing! You are beautiful and an inspiration.
Oh my gosh, I’m sorry you went through that, too! It does make it even more challenging, doesn’t it?? I hope you come to a decision for yourself, one way or the other, that makes you truly, peacefully, contentedly happy. Please let me know how it’s going and what you decide. And also, please know that I’ll be your cheerleader/supporter–whether you decide to keep coloring or not. And thank you for supporting me by watching my video, Sue! ~Janis
What do you use under your eyes which white shadow under your eyes?looks so cute and white bright?
Hi, Carmen. Thank you! The answer is: Moisturizer. That’s it. First I apply my facial moisturizer all over and let it dry. Then my powder makeup and any blush and eye makeup. (I put nothing but moisturizer under my eyes.) Lastly, after I’ve finished applying all my makeup, I dab under my eyes a little organic shea butter, too. Just before I walk out the door, I dab it with dry fingertips to remove any excess. The skin under my eyes has always been quite dry, so this is what I do. I don’t wear any makeup in that area because it emphasizes my wrinkles and doesn’t do much for covering up the dark circles anyway! Thanks for watching my video! ~Janis
in your video under your eyes looks like, you use white eye shadow?cause seem white bright,I am curious what is this?
Hi, Carmen! I wear a moisturizer, 100 percent organic shea butter, under my eyes. I don’t wear powder, foundation, or concealer because they tend to emphasize the fine lines and be too drying. Thank you for asking! ~Janis
Have you ever use organic zao or logona lipsticks?

Carmen, until you shared the names and links, I’d never heard of them before. I will definitely have to look into them. Thank you for telling me about them. So far my favorite organic/natural lipsticks have come from the 100 Percent Pure, Gabriel, ZuZu, and Honeybee cosmetic lines. ~Janis

Thank you, Hannah. I appreciate you leaving such a sweet comment! ~Janis
I just discovered your blog, and I’ve bookmarked it! What a terrific blog! There are so many fashion blogs for and by the young (and I read many of them, too) but as we get older, there are different concerns, e.g., as you mentioned, our legs (and arms) are no longer the same. Also, once I stopped coloring my hair (and what a wonderful sense of freedom that gave!) I could (and needed) to begin wearing a whole new range of color. For what it’s worth, I think your hair, long and grey, is beautiful.
Thank you, Judi, for saying my long and gray hair is beautiful. I do appreciate it. And I’m thrilled you like my blog. Thank you for telling me! Janis
What camera do you use for make a video?the same camera with you took a pictures?
Hi, Hannah. I started out using an iPhone 5 for my videos and vlogs and Nikon 3300 for photos. I now use a Canon 70D for my videos and photographs, and I do my vlogging with my iPhone 6s. I also can get some fairly good photographs from some of my videos by doing screenshots. Thanks for you question! ~Janis

Hi Janis, I have just found your blog and am so excited. Finally, a soul sister! I am 50 and just going grey. I am looking forward to it because I genuinely like the colour. I know people will judge me and see me as old, but I’m OK with that. It’s about time that older women got a better rap, in my opinion. The only problem with my hair going grey is that it is not coming in evenly, so I am highlighting it to help even it out. I am going to start writing a blog myself and I will be quoting you, if OK.
Della, that’s terrific that you’re going to do a blog and share your journey with going gray naturally. Please keep me (us) posted!! ~Janis

Try and tell me what do you think.Stay happy!
Rose, it’s just my personal opinion, but my concern with their lipsticks is that they have quite a few ingredients on the label that I don’t recognize (or appear questionable in terms of how healthy they are). I prefer fewer ingredients and ingredients that I know what they are (and I know they aren’t harmful). ~Janis
Which ingredients janis?your advices important for me I trust you, cause I am using everytime because of %100 organic
Hi Rose. There are several items on the list that are not explained in parenthasese (what are they or what are they from?), so I am uncomfortable with them. Especially since I already know I don’t like all the ingredients that have numbers. I will put up with an iron ixide, for example, if everything else looks ok if not perfect. ~Janis
This is their full list: diheptyl succinate, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer, cera alba [beeswax], candelilla cera [euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax], helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, behenyl alcohol, oleic/linoleic/linolenic polyglycerides, C12-18 acid triglyceride, lanolin, hydrogenated vegetable oil, cera carnauba [copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax], moringa oleifera seed oil, rubus idaeus (raspberry) seed oil, sorbitan tristearate, glyceryl caprylate, aroma [flavor], tocopherol, glycine soja (soybean) oil, lauroyl lysine, citric acid, linalool. May contain [+/-]: mica, CI 77891 [titanium dioxide], CI 75470 [carmine], CI 77491•CI 77492 •CI 77499 [iron oxides]

Oh Janis I’am not talking about burts bees lipsticks, sorry sorry I mean lip balms 🙂
Lip balms without numbers and chemicals.Only herbal. Here is ingredients

http://www.burtsbees.com/Pink-Grapefruit-Lip-Balm-Twin-Pack/01454-00,default,pd.html?cgid=lipbalm&start=18&q=#start=18
I am using everytime, these lipbalms colored, look like lipsticks.Theyre super soft and gorgeous. You should try lipbalms 🙂
Happy Days~
Hi Rose. My (personal)concern with Burt’s Bees lip balms is their ingredients of soya and canola oils, neither of which are organic in their formulas. Since they are not organic they are usually from two very highly sprayed GMO (genetically modified) crops (with very strong weed killer), which I don’t want to consume. Some cosmetics at least use non-GMO soy or canola. Burts Bees does not say these arw non-GMO. Best, if course, is organic.
Their ingredients list on the pink grapefruit lip balm:
helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), aroma (flavor)*, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, citrus paradisi (grapefruit) seed oilrosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, tocopherol, ammonium glycyrrhizate, canola oil (huile de colza), glycine soja (soybean) oil, limonene. *natural flavor

what’s the normal temperature where you live??? just curious
Hi, Emily! During our winters (December-Late February), the coldest (nighttime) temperatures are usually in the mid- to high-30’s (degrees Farenheit), although I don’t think it did this year, since it was quite a warm winter. During the summer, the highest temperatures are around the low 90s (degrees Farenheit). Hope that answers your question. 🙂 ~Janis

Hello Janis, I just discovered your Youtube channel and I love your style. I am your age.
You look beautiful with your grey hair. Often women look older with coloured hair, especially with dark colours. But many women just don’t feel good with grey, i can understand this as well.
I am looking forward to more films. I am from Germany.
Trudy, I’m so glad you found my blog/channel! I’ve never been to Germany. It looks lovely in pictures. Thank you for your sweet comment about my hair! ~Janis

I really like your blog and vlogs. You have a beautiful voice. I found you through Susan from Fifty not Frumpy. I can relate to your style and make-up while I am living in Luxembourg (Europe) and being Italian. 🙂 Please allow me to explain – Susan is dressing less colorful (French way) and you use colors very tastefully (this is my Italian nature). 🙂 I don’t how your hair looked before, the only thing I am saying is “don’t change anything as it’s perfect”. Thank you for sharing. Catia
You are so sweet, Catia! I appreciate you saying that about my hair. Some people do NOT feel the same and are quite vocal about it!! 🙂 I’m so grateful to Susan for mentioning me. Thank you for letting me know. Cheers! ~Janis
You are so lovely. Thank you for sharing your journey and your perspective on living a beautiful, elegant life. On the gray hair … I have tried three times now to go to my natural color and each time my friends and family stage what I call, an intervention to keep me from “ruining” my appearance (their words). Some day I hope to have the courage to see it through. Perhaps if I spend a year on a desert island. Lol Looking forward to seeing your posts and videos.
Anne, I am so sorry you’re having to go through that with family and friends. It’s interesting how much people who care about us do want to help but can inadvertently sting us a bit, too, while they’re at it. They don’t mean to, of course. They’re just trying to keep us safe. When and if the time is right for you, it will hopefully feel less difficult. It definitely took me some time to finally make the decision. Please, please keep me posted!! And if you decide not to color it, that’s terrific, too. What matters is what’s right for YOU. 🙂 Hugs ~Janis
I just started following your blog and I also follow you on Instagram. I think you look lovely with your beautiful, grey hair. You are an inspiration to me who recently started growing out my grey hair. I am 45 years old and after 20 years of highlighting my hair it is about time to stop. Best regards Mette from Denmark
Hi, Mette from Denmark! Thank you so much for following both my blog and Instagram sites, and for taking the time to let me know. I’m so happy you have reached a place where you are comfortable with your grey hair and are now growing it out. That’s so wonderful. Best regards to you, too, and thank you again!! ~Janis
Hi Janis,
Thank you for all you’ve shared. Do you have any children?
Yes if your hair wasn’t grey you would look younger. I’m glad you are letting your hair go grey. You are an inspiration. Some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen have been older women with grey hair
and wrinkles. I think as we grow old we should concentrate on inner beauty as that comes through onto your face. I was in my early 20s living in New Zealand when I first saw this older grey haired women talking and laughing with her granddaughter, she had me capitivated Another experince here was an 80 year old with a long grey ponytail dancing around the crowd at an outside bar. ive seen other women with grey hair and they are beautiful . You have a beautiful face and seem beautiful inside. Let your hair go grey and keep it long.
