(ABOVE) I’ve had this classic pencil skirt, cardigan, and fun camisole for seven or eight years. I wore it for a recent visit to The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, where I attended a fundraising luncheon held by the League Club.

I knew I loved this peach-pink, gold-metallic skirt the moment I saw it at J. Crew seven or eight years ago. But I wasn’t sure what top to put with it, so I asked a sales associate for her advice. When she brought me this cotton and linen camisole and orchid cashmere cardigan, I was doubtful. The color of the cardigan was nowhere to be found in the skirt (I thought). And as for the camisole–with its casual linen/cotton material, raw-edged fabric strips and enormous rhinestone embellishments–it was something to wear with jeans, not a refined skirt.
Reluctantly, I put it all on, zipped up the skirt, and looked in the mirror. In that moment, I fell head over heels in love with J. Crew.
I had already known I loved their modern interpretation of classic basics. But on this day, I also realized that the brand’s true magic was how they tossed those basics together.
For me, it was a valuable lesson in not only how to style clothing but also in how to live my life in general. If I have a preconceived notion that I shouldn’t do something because my mother, parents, grandparents or whomever never did, this J. Crew outfit taught me to at least consider reconsidering.
Because, sometimes even for an uptight and conservative girl like me, loosening up a little can be a good thing.
I hope you enjoy this quick peek inside The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Florida (scroll to bottom of page for my video). I was there for a few hours, attending a benefit luncheon put on by The League Club–which raises funds for Southwest Florida charities. It was great fun seeing the hotel again.
Happy Spring, everyone! ~Janis Lyn Johnson
