Usually, I wear a size 27 in J. Crew jeans, but I accidentally ordered a size 28 in these J. Crew Matchstick jeans (in the color Racerbrook). I kept them, because they’d already been washed when I discovered the size issue.
Before attempting to shrink them, I decided to experiment and see if they could give me a “boyfriend jeans” look. (I’ve been looking for a pair for ages and have been unsuccessful in finding any that look right on me.)
I like the idea of boyfriend jeans. They’re typically more comfortable than skinny jeans, because of the looser fit. Yet they’re still supposed to be figure flattering, since they taper at the bottom. I’m wearing my new jeans here, still oversized, with one of the new “blanket scarves” I’ve been seeing everywhere this fall/winter season. This one I found at Land’s End. The site Shopstyle.com has many options, too.
Taking a look at the photograph of model Miranda Kerr (below), it’s clear that the more washed (and softened) the jeans, the better, if you want a boyfriend-jeans look. I’m not sure my new jeans will ever get that softened, worn look. They’re really quite stiff. And, they were not actually made to be boyfriend jeans either.
So, since this photo shoot, I decided to go ahead and shrink them down to my normal size and length–and I’m much happier with them now. Whether or not I will ever find a pair of true boyfriend jeans that I like on me remains to be seen, but I’m still open to them.
….That was more information about a pair of jeans than you ever, ever wanted to know, wasn’t it.
