MEDIA I’M LOVING & MY CASUAL-MEETING OOTD
Classic Drama Coming To Theaters
If you are like me, you still miss Downton Abbey. I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since the final episode. There just wasn’t and still isn’t anything like it on television, and it will be as watchable in 10 years as it was when it first aired here in the U.S. in 2011. It truly is a classic.
Although I know it isn’t the same as a weekly series, I was thrilled to learn at @downtonabbeyofficial on Instagram that it’s coming back in a feature film to be released September 2019. Not a lot of details have been released yet about the cast or storyline, but the great news is that both Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery are returning (as Dowager Countess Violet and Lady Mary). Take a look at the photographs below, and you’ll see Lady Mary’s son, Master George. So cute!
Classic Interior Design and Fashion on YouTube and Instagram
It’s obvious from the name of my blog that I love all things classic. Classics are timeless, ageless, and multigenerational. Because they engage parents, children, and grandchildren in all relating to the same thing, they’re unifying, and who doesn’t love that?
Holly and Karen Holden are a good example. Both love classic style and entertaining. Holly is an American interior designer I’ve mentioned before here on my blog (I reviewed Holly’s book and her PBS Television series). I’m bringing her up again, because she now has a new channel, Holly Holden on YouTube, which she’s hosting with her daughter-in-law Karen Holden. They post a new video every Thursday and discuss a variety of topics on classic interior design, entertaining, and gracious living. What I love about their videos is that I’m not only treated to something classic and pretty related to the home, but also to fashion, because they dress beautifully. Best of all, the two seem to really like each other and enjoy being together, and that makes their videos fun to watch.
Another great place to find something pretty in classic home design is @theglampad on Instagram. Curated by Andrea, who I believe is from the Miami area of Florida, both her Instagram and blog, The Glam Pad, feature home exterior, interior, and decor photographs that are such a delight. I particularly love the decor shots, which showcase gorgeous linens, china, flatware, pottery and figurines, all from other Instagram feeds that she follows. Like me, she loves pastel pink, blue and green, so I’m in classic design Heaven whenever I scroll her Instagram.
Recently, she also launched a six-part series on etiquette, featuring British etiquette expert @mykameier, “who trained under a formal member of The Royal Household of Her Majesty the Queen,” according to Andrea. I think this is a good reference, whether it’s to learn for the first time what is proper–or to remind us.
Getting back to pretty china, I found a great video by Architectural Digest on YouTube that shows how to set a dinner table in under 40 seconds. You learn what every item is, where it’s placed on the table, and you can screenshot the final place setting for future reference. It’s especially handy if you’re like me and often forget which stemmed glass is for which beverage.
Something else I often forget is how to tie and style scarves, so last year I searched the Internet looking for a good reference guide to which I could refer whenever I wanted. The one I like the best so far is this video by designer Eileen Fisher on YouTube (it’s under three minutes in length). It features a variety of scarves in difference fabrics and sizes, and gives nine different tying options. The one I show below is my favorite, and I could never have figured out (let alone remembered) how to do it without this video. (Speaking of scarves, don’t Holly and Karen look great in their scarves at the top of this page?)
Classic Burgundy Blazer OOTD
I didn’t notice this until right now, but how funny is it that the most recent Maggie Smith Instagram photo (which I posted below) shows her wearing a burgundy jacket, too? It’s such a gorgeous, rich color. I just love it. Mine is made of a stretch-knit cotton blend, so it’s very comfortable. I think stretch-knit is particularly good to wear when traveling, because it doesn’t feel restraining. Same with this blouse, because it’s a stretch-cotton poplin. It caught my attention on line, because of the tiny beading around the peter pan collar and down the front. It’s so pretty! For more details, and all relative links, scroll to the bottom of the page.

Hi Janis, You look terrific in everything…I especially love the pretty blouse. I wish they would make more blouses styled for women with pretty, larger collars and princess seams and especially with dressier, deeper hems. Talbots has gotten away from that in recent years and keeps showing boxy shirts. In the catalogue, they roll up the sleeves and tuck them in … but when one tries them on, they look boxy and mannish. Why not just make a blouse with a 3/4 length sleeve and French cuff and a shorter length with a pretty, deep hem so we can wear them outside our pants and skirts.
Also, thank you for the links. I have subscribed or looked at all of them. I look forward to the Downton movie and the new season of The Crown.
Hi! I just love this VLOG. You always have something interesting here. (and I like your new site.) You have reminded me that I was raised by my ever stylish mother to love classic style in all things. I think I lost my way for a bit in my desire to be more youthful in my dressing, etc. Your VLOG reminds me of fresh ways to be classic and that I can never go wrong with classic style. Thank you!
