My 25 Favorite Classic Picks
Because there are so many items to comb through, I got up before dawn to dig through the site and put together some of my favorite classic choices for women. There are many more, too (all women’s Fall sale items here), but I wanted to give you a peek at just some of the understated and timeless Fall-Winter 2017 pretties.
I hope you enjoy my round up…and happy shopping!
~Janis Lyn Johnson
1. TIE-HEM SWEATER 2. ANKLE PANTS
(ABOVE) Halogen Tie-Hem Sweater and Kick Flare Knit Ankle Pants (each $49.90 now, $79 later). Other colors, too. More gray sweaters here.
This outfit is so classic, I love it to pieces. It reminds me of Mary Tyler Moore (a.k.a. Laura Petrie) in the Dick Van Dyke show. The sweater is 75% nylon, 15% wool, and 10% alpaca, so it’s perfect for keeping you cozy without being too hot–even in Florida’s winter weather. The cropped, flared hem of the simple black pant gives the outfit a fun touch.
3. GRAY PLEAT MIDI SKIRT
(ABOVE) Halogen Pleat Midi Skirt ($49.90 now, $79 later). More gray skirts here.
See me wearing an almost identical version of this skirt in a “You’ve Got Mail”–inspired post from late summer 2015. It’s such a lovely, timeless piece. I know I’ll be wearing mine until I’m at least 100.
4. ANKLE-WRAP FLAT
(ABOVE) Halogen Oliver Ankle Wrap Flat ($59.90 now, $89.95 later). Other colors, too. More metallic flats here.
Ankle-tie ballet flats are popular again this fall, and I couldn’t be happier (see me in similar flats last October here). They’re such a pretty, feminine shoe. I love them for softening cropped pants, leggings, and jeans.
5. METALLIC-LEATHER GROSSBODY BAG
(ABOVE) Rebecca Minkoff Small Love Leather Crossbody Bag ($129.90 now, $195 later). Other colors, materials, too. More metallic bags here, here.
If you love the Chanel Boy Bag but not the price, this one is a lovely alternative! The chevron quilting and black hardware make it so interesting for evening or for day.
6. SILVER & 18K GOLD BRACELET WITH DIAMONDS
(ABOVE) Lagos Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Diamond Caviar Bracelet ($999.90 now, $1,500 later). More Lagos bracelets here.
Lagos is a wonderful brand, and their iconic silver caviar jewelry looks beautiful alone or stacked with other pieces. I think this bracelet is just perfect with a watch.
7. CASHMERE WRAP
(ABOVE) Halogen Waffle-Knit Cashmere Wrap ($125.90 now, $189 later). Other colors, too. More gray wraps here. Also shown: black leather jacket, navy sweater, blue button up shirt, gray pants.
The color of this wrap caught my attention first. In fact, I love the look of the entire outfit above. Navy with dark and light gray is so beautiful. It would look just as lovely worn over a little black dress, tossed over an ivory sofa, or thrown on the end of a bed. It’s so versatile and comes in several other colors, too.
8. EMBROIDERED-LOOK FLAT
(ABOVE) Sam Edelman Rafaella Pointy Toe Ballet Flat, black multi ($99.90 now, $149.95 later). Other colors, patterns, too. More pretty flats here, here. All fall sale ballet flats here.
These shoes are gorgeous on line. They look like the more expensive embroidered shoes we’re seeing for fall, but I think they’re a patterned material, rather than embroidery, so the cost is much, much less. I would wear them with pants, jeans, skirts and definitely with a solid dress that’s pink, antique rose, blush-peach, beige, chocolate brown, ivory, or black. You can see them on line worn with jeans and the Halogen Waffle-Knit Cashmere Wrap I show above, but in the brown soft heather, which is a light camel color.
9. KNIT BLAZER
(ABOVE) Caslon Knit Blazer ($39.90 now, $59 later). Other colors, too. More black blazers here.
Because it’s made of a light-weight knit, this jacket would work well now and all the way through fall, winter, and spring. It’s such a pretty classic with jeans, like shown above, or with white, blush, burgundy or gray pants, skirts, and dresses. I have this jacket in two colors!
10. HOUNDSTOOTH BLAZER
(ABOVE) J. Crew. Regent Houndstooth Blazer ($165.90 now, $258 later). Another classic jacket here. ($99.90 now, $149 later).
This jacket is so iconic. Wear it with a white ruffle-neck blouse and black or brown pencil skirt and pumps or boots, or dress it down with a button-up shirt, v-neck sweater, and jeans or corduroys.
11. QUILTED VEST
(ABOVE) Gallery Quilted Vest ($79.90 now, $118 later). More vests here.
I love the smaller quilting on this vest. It’s not so puffy that it overwhelms. The brown faux-suede trim adds the perfect equestrian/hunting finishing touch.
12. WATER RESISTANT SUEDE ANKLE BOOT
(ABOVE) Paul Green Nora Water Resistant Suede Ankle Boot ($259.90 now, $389 later). Other color, too. More boots here.
The heel of these suede boots is just high enough to elongate the leg but isn’t so high that it’s incapacitating. Just as important, these boots are sleek and water resistant. Case closed.
13. ANORAK
(ABOVE) Michael Michael Kors Faux-Laeather Trim Anorak ($119.90 now, $180 later). More anoraks here.
I love an anorak jacket because the waist cinches in, and that is so flattering. This one is also a gorgeous combination of navy and brown faux-suede trim. Love it to pieces!
14. PAINT-STRIPE TOTE
(ABOVE) Madewell Transport Leather Tote ($129.90 now, $198 later). Other colors, too. More brown/burgundy bags here.
This tote is dark cabernet, which I love, but I had a hard time choosing between all four of the colors. What is it about that preppy center stripe that’s so appealing? And, of course, it’s a tote. You know I had to put one in here!
15. Ballerina Flat
(ABOVE) Tory Burch Claire Ballerina Flat ($164.90 now, $258-$268 later). More colors, too.
It’s a ballet flat, there are four color choices, it’s Tory Burch, and it’s on sale. Done.
16. BEZEL-STATION NECKLACE
(ABOVE) Nadri 48″ Bezel-Station Necklace ($64.90 now, $98 later). Other metal colors, too.
I have a similar necklace and have worn the heck out of it during the last 10 or so years. It’s lovely doubled and tripled or left long. Imagine it with a black cashmere sweater, black pants, and black pumps. Beautiful.
17. SUEDE LOAFER MULE
(ABOVE) Kate Spade Cavelle Suede Loafer Mule ($169.90 now, $278 later).
If you have a mule, then you know how comfy they are–and how cute! This one is so pretty with the embellishing. Plus it’s pink! I’d wear this with black, burgundy, or chocolate pants, and of course, jeans. Did you notice, too, it’s Kate Spade? On sale? Yes, please.
18. HIGH-WAIST SKINNY JEANS
(Above) AG Farrah High-Waist Skinny Jeans, deep currant. ($125.90 now, $188 later). Similar Skinny Jeans, $39.
These jeans are high waisted –and they’re that burgundy color that is so rich and scrumptious in fall and winter. Pop on a white tee and gold leather sandals and they look just as great for the rest of the summer, too.
19. BELL-SLEEVE FLEECE PULLOVER
(ABOVE) Gibson Bell-Sleeve Cozy Fleece Pullover ($39.90 now, $59 later).
Cute, cozy, feminine, loose fitting. Everything about this sweater appeals to me for a casual day in the fall. It’s also wool free.
20. DIAMOND MINI-BAR BRACELET
(ABOVE) Monica Vinader Stellar Pave Diamond Mini-Bar Bracelet ($665.90 now, $995 later). Also diamond bar bracelet Lagos, $750. Early holiday gift? Birthday gift? Anniversary gift? Hint. Hint. So pretty–and a savings of more than $300.
21. BOILED WOOL-BLEND COAT
(ABOVE) Tahari Tessa Boiled Wool-Blend Coat ($139.90 now, $248 later). Other color, too.
This entire outfit is adorable. Pink, ivory, and gray. If we had cold winters in Southwest Florida, I’d buy this coat in a heartbeat.
22. MULTI-STRIPE SCARF
(ABOVE) B.P. Multi-Stripe Scarf ($15.90 now, $25 later). More tan/plaid/stripe scarves here, here. Tan/black plaid scarf here.
This scarf is 100-percent polyester, so it’s wearable year-round. I’d tie it just as they’re showing it–over a white top with black, blush, chocolate, or burgundy pants or blue jeans.
23. CALF-HAIR ANKLE-WRAP FLAT
(ABOVE Halogen Oliver Calf-Hair Ankle-Wrap Flat ($59.90 now, $89.95 later).
Too cute for words.
24. RUFFLE-COLLAR SHIRT
(ABOVE) Caslon Chambray Ruffle-Collar-Shirt ($49.90 now, $69 later).
I love chambray. I love button ups. I love ruffle necks. What’s not to love about this top? It’s also under $50.
25. EXPANDABLE NYLON TOTE
(ABOVE) Longchamp Le Pliage Expandable Tote, pinky ($129.90 now, $195 later). Other colors, too. More pink totes here.
Longchamp’s nylon totes are fabulous for everyday life but they’re terrific for travel, too. This one especially–plus, it folds up into a small envelope for stowing away in luggage or a drawer. (It comes in five different colors.)

Hi Janis
I am new to your blogs and have only visited a couple of them. The more I see the more I love them. You are so classy and i really enjoy your ‘down the earth’ attitude and classic style.
I use to be a ready to wear buyer for a small chain of updated. designer speciality stores mostly located on the West Coast, named I Magnin for 15 years. I understand and know quality, wearable and classic style that will last many years. I’ am willing to spend money on clothing such as these however they are harder and harder to find.
My husband and I have recently retired from work and San Francisco. We are now living in beautiful Sedona, Az and have just finishing building our dream home. Life is nice in Sedona with the beautiful red rock views to the small town, and high dessert living. I’m now ready to change in my work clothes in for a more casual but classical look. The time is right, the money is low but your blog has given me a bounty of new ideas.
I loved what you choose as your “favorites” from the Nordstrom sale however I’m on the late side of things and most styles have sold out in my size. I’ll have to keep an eye on things and wait for restocking, If and when that happens. (oh well)
I’m happy I found you. You are so much like me, the way you dress to the way you look as well as age. Your a perfect person for me to copy so thanks for making it easy for me when it comes to choosing my clothes. lol.
Sharolyn, I’m honored to receive a comment from you. I remember I Magnin. The name is synonymous with luxury brands. Your eye for fashion must be so fine tuned. I envy you your knowledge! I am completely humbled that you even noticed my blog. Thank you! How wonderful that you and your husband are at a point in your lives where you can relocate to such a lovely place and build your dream home! That is fantastic! What an exciting time! We do begin to dress differently when we shift from working a full-time, 9-5 job, don’t we? We have more leisure time, so we spend more on casual attire than we might have before. It’s also an exciting time in terms of fashion, I think, because we can be much more creative when we’re not dressing within the parameters of a business situation so much of the time. Like you, I was in a creative business field–lifestyle magazines–but still, it was business, so I always had to keep that in mind. About “copying” me…Isn’t it wonderful to have the internet so we can all see how other women our age are dressing for their real lives these days? I do the same as you and “copy” other women’s looks, too. Maybe it’s a woman I saw in a shopping mall, at a luncheon or party, on Instagram or YouTube, on a blog or a reality tv show, in a film, in a clothing catalog…The great thing about it is, you and I–all of us–then put our own twist on the outfit we saw on the other woman, and we create our own version of it. Invariably, we never have all of the exact items that other woman wore, so our look becomes totally unique to each and every one of us. It’s so fun!! Thank you for your kind compliment and also for taking the time to come visit me here and leave your comment. I appreciate it! Have a great weekend. ~ Janis
