Making New Memories at The Naples Beach Hotel

The day I shot this vlog at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club, it was just before the extreme heat had descended. The sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds–which is why the lighting is varied in all my photographs–but luckily we were spared the rain that was predicted. In fact, it was a pretty, breezy day in the 80s.

For that reason, my friend Suzanne and I ate lunch outside at the hotel’s beachside restaurant, HB’s on The Gulf, even though we were both dressed for air-conditioning (and I for a meeting later that day).

I hadn’t been to the hotel since Mother’s Day five or so years ago–at least, I hadn’t been on the Gulf side. I was on the golf course side last February for the Wine, Women & Shoes Fundraising Luncheon.

It was so fun to visit it again. I’ve known the Watkins family, who owns the hotel, since I first moved to Naples in the summer of 1984. I remember coordinating a swimsuit fashion shoot for the magazine where I worked on that exact beach the following summer. (I also remember the art director at the time whining that the model I’d chosen was too old. She was 30!)

Back then, Naples was a much smaller town and pretty much everyone knew everybody else. I met my husband the following year–he’d been here since 1976–and I feel like all of us have more or less grown up here. We were so young in the 80s!

Looking at the photographs from this shoot, I think Suzanne looks so cute in her pastel wrap dress–she actually matches the tropical backdrop of the hotel. (For the video and photographs, Blogger Me wishes I’d picked soft pastels, too!)

Still, I love this Brooks Brothers shirt dress. (Similar ones are linked at the bottom of this post.) I’ve had it for six or seven years, and wear it a lot. It’s especially great for when I want something feminine that’s also appropriate for an office setting (and the chilly air conditioning).
