This classically sleek, all-white kitchen is located in a British West Indies-style home in Southwest Florida.

It was designed by Missi Davis, CKD (photo below), who came to the project when decorator Joan Simonsen-Hickok asked her to consult on a client’s house plans.

“[The kitchen] did not work in terms of the client’s needs,” says Davis, who ultimately was hired by the homeowners, based on the totally new plans she designed and presented to them. “That is probably one of the strongest tools I can bring to the table. I am a huge proponent of form following function. If the kitchen isn’t easy to work in, I haven’t done my job.”

As a kitchen designer, Davis is responsible for placement of the cabinetry, and styling, textural feeling, overall ambiance, and placement of the drawers, doors, and accessories. On this project, her job also entailed making sure an all-white kitchen was interesting from a cabinetry standpoint.

“A case in point is the glass pantries opposite from the range wall,” Davis says. Instead of placing them against the wall, she built them into niches, topped with understated pediments.

Davis also designed the cabinets so they do not go up to the ceiling.

“Taking only the custom hood up to the crown line is a great way to define the scale of the room. The room feels bigger when you can see the back of the walls behind the [top of the] cabinets.”

Although she has designed many kitchens, this one, Davis adds, is one of her favorites. “We do a lot of white, painted cabinets, but the light in this room is amazing. And, it just makes me happy to stand in the middle of it.” ~Janis Lyn Johnson
