(ABOVE) This top is definitely unusual, because of the flared bottom, but I think it makes the outfit fun and interesting.

How To Take Chances With Statement-Making Fashion and Not Regret It

I found this skirt by Torn by Ronny Kobo at Marshall’s last summer and loved it at first sight. It’s such a pretty, girly color and classic shape. I also knew I had a 10-year-old pair of blush slingback pumps that would pair with it beautifully.

It wasn’t until the following week, when I returned to Marshall’s, that I found this top by the same designer. I had no way of knowing if it was made to go with the skirt, because Marshall’s doesn’t pair up outfits that way. Skirts are with skirts and tops with tops. That didn’t bother me too much, because I always mix and match different designers and styles. What I was not sure I was comfortable with was how flared it was at the bottom. It was a very different look for me, and I wondered how much I would wear it.

It wasn’t that I minded my midriff showing a little–that was cute. It was just that it was so…well…flared. Especially when paired with a full skirt, somehow it made the outfit feel statement-making. And to be honest, I’m not that comfortable making a statement with my fashion. I’m not that confident.

I don’t know how long I stood in the dressing room hemming and hawing, but I finally decided I would take a chance and buy the top because 1) I really did like it, and 2) it was not too expensive (I think it was under $50).

Today, I still really like it and am happy I bought it. I have a vintage, high-waisted, slim-fit, black wool midi skirt of my mother’s I think would look good with it, too. But in the end, the main reason I don’t regret the purchase is because I didn’t spend very much money on it. After all, I doubt it’s something I’ll wear 20-plus years from now.

Then again, I kind of sort of like the idea of wearing it when I’m 80!
